come on guys, hip-hop has been dead for years.
So true
You dont have to like a certain style to see how it works for its target audience
If you cant listen to a Sugarbabes track or similar and hear what it is about it that makes a really good hook or a breakdown between verses then you arent qualified to give an opinion on it - it may be cheesy bollocks but if you cant appreciate it for what it is then you can **** off calling yourself a musican in my opinion.
Saying pop is shit is a waste of a sentance - it is what it is - How many pioneers in the style of music that we all love have had chart success - remember Donna Summer, The Shamen, Snap, The Prodigy - thats the definition of pop - popular music, nothing more - dont tell me the KLF were not important in the wider dissemination of dance music, dont tell me that 808 state or bomb the bass or happy mondays or PWEI or even bullshit artists like benny benasi have not been instrumental in putting the message of dance music across to a larger audience
US hip hop is dead?
Bro as an active member of the Ayak Fam/Lo-Lifes
Hip hop is far from dead in the states.
It's just if you want to hear quality underground material you have to look for it.
Such as:
Action Bronson
Timeless Truth
Sean Price
Marco Polo & Ruste Juxx just put out one of the best underground hip hop albums I've heard in a long time
Mos Def put out an incredible album
Madlib is STILL Innovating
MF DOOM Anyone!!!!???
And peep the Timeless Truth & Sean Price video for "Priceless"
with a cameo by yours truly.
I'm not a hip hop fan of anything post 2000 however, that being said I can agree with Tony, the US are pushing out some seriously great hiphop- underground and non mainstream of course. I got a couple of CD's while I was in NewYork. Tasty beats and fresh talent.
@Blistanbul: Hip Hop in it's purest form is not dead, by any stretch of the imagination. The stuff you are referring to is Pop fluff and nothing more.
@Tony: Looked it up last night- wicked track and I saw you making gang signs haha wicked mate! More of this.
hip-hop is dead? nonono. i just saw jay-z and he f*cking killed it. one of the tightest, most energetic live shows i've ever seen.
but i do agree up to a point. most mainstream hip-hop today is just horrid, all cheesy auto-tune vocals, lazy rhymes and boring beats. it's all about the decline of west coast hip-hop and the emergence of the throwaway labels from the south.
on the other hand, there's still a lot of great underground sh*t. some are drawing on electronic dance music in innovative, not derivative ways. good example:
YouTube - Common ft. Pharrell "Universal Mind Control"
YouTube - Mos Def Quiet Dog Bites Hard
Jay-Z? I dunno, that "Hard knock life" tune really killed me off... Just stupid, novelty, gimmicky rubbish designed for the top 40 chart. Tho, to be fair, he did a track called "DOA - Death of Autotune"
i can't say i'm his biggest fan in the world, but i appreciate that he pushes the envelope. i also thought the live show was tight as f*ck.
the production on "DOA: death to the auto-tune" is really great. kanye west may be a colossal d*ck, but he's great behind the boards:
YouTube - Jay-Z - D.O.A. [Death of Autotune]
also like "off that," from the most recent album, produced by timbaland:
YouTube - Jay-Z - Off That (Ft. Drake) Prod. By Timbaland
Hijacked!
come on hip hoppers, give it a rest!
and yes of course I would remix Will Young, I would be crazy not to.
but but but.... this is a thread about hiphop being 'startled' by dance, H!!!
yeah henry, get with the program!
