techno is in a sad state in the U.S

having lived my entire life in the U.S, i am used to being techno starved. we only get a handful of quality events that offer real techno every year. these events took on extreme importance to those of us who can't live with out that sound, and even though we'd have to wait months at a time for these rare occasions, they were usually amazing nights that we could hold onto until the next time. the last year and a half has been so disappointing though. fewer and fewer promoters are booking techno dj's and when they do it is always the same few. most recently, even dj's we've always been able to count on to deliver the goods have been more than just a little disappointing. they aren't really playing techno anymore. they all seem to be experimenting with this minimal, slow (and boring) house/electro tech stuff. while i can appreciate this sound, it just doesn't move a dancefloor like those pounding grooves we are so deprived of here. i haven't heard a dj (other than my friends) bang techno proper in at least a year. i'm starting to lose faith. i know most of the people who frequent this website live in europe. i hope you all know just how fortunate you are. and to any techno dj's who do play occasionally in the U.S., when you come, just let it rip!

I would say Droid gets the most respect out of any crew on the West Coast and Zahn in the Midwest...I know NYC has sht poppin off too...Other than that, get up off your arse and do something. If you don't work, you don't eat...Think about it.

I can agree with that, I have been in this industry for 12 years, I have seen it's ups and downs, but when it really comes down to it, people really do need to get off their asses and really start using their heads to make that difference. As of recently, I have been seeing this industry making that loop back to bigger events, better talent, excuse me, talent that should frequent the states more often. People are making more of an effort lately (for example in the last recent months : Regis, Surgeon, this Saturday Cari Lekebusch, coming up is Speedy J...).. I don't know but, I am finding a bigger smile on my face when I do attend these events...they're poppin off. I am the Techno buyer at Wax Addict Records. I see where this music has gone too, all I can do is PUSH the harder Techno, because for one, I can't resist it. Just gotta keep on pushing, in the end it'll all pay off.

i think the interesting thing about US techno is that, while sometimes events are tough to find, it has driven so many people into their studios and really bolstered the creative juices for so many of us.

that said, i get pretty bored in the studio sometimes, so i understand the need for a good rip roaring party, but everyone has already stated the key to this. if you want something bad enough, you'll make it happen.

If you are really tight into the US techno industry (and many of us here are) you will see a growing 'techno-circuit' in the States.

A worthy techno soldier from abroad will play in NYC, then immediatly in Philly, then in Chicago and then in another midwest spot or two, then down to Texas.

The pattern is repeating over and over.

There is techno here!

I think right now overall this statement is very correct. Atleast where I live here in AZ, I am one of the only people who brings the techno. There are a few, but for the most part I am the only one doign any shows out here. My Homie Brandon DeCarlo is also present now too though, and with the additional Of WETWORKS, AZ should be changing direction. I plan on making these changes very soon as out here, everything is over run by Drum N bass.

I know i'm going off on a bit of a tangent here but what's the possibility of getting and us/uk meet up ( east coast preferable for obvious reasons ). Flights are (fairly)cheap, we could hook up and get get somekind of BOA meets US party going on. We'd obviously need some place to party without restraint to make it worthwhile ;)

Seriously, if any euro BOA member ( or anyone else not from this board ) is interested then please let me know and if interest is high then i'll look into getting something sorted for a trans america trip sorted for later this year, early next year.

and it's relatively cheap for midwesterners and west coasters to fly east...

its important to note that the USA is vastly larger (in square miles) than any other techno country in the world.

it is impossible to calculate all the isolated techno heads in the United States, but it is quite possible for them to number in the hundreds of thousands (if not millions).

and city for city, there is more techno strongholds in the US than any other country. some are just a bit stunted due to oppressive anti-rave government.

i mean look at it - NYC, Philly, Bmore/DC, Chicago, Detroit, and many others.... lots of techno in the US, even if you unfortuntly live thousands of miles away from it.

I think what this person is getting at is that when all the globally known techno jocks Beyer/Carola/Hawtin (to name a few) come through the U.S they are playing more minimal stripped down techno and not the usual Bangin bring the house down trax. Sure there are alot of peopele doing good things in small pockets around the US but the artists that have left us gasping for air in the past are playing more chilled out music and there just havent been any shows that have left that shocked feeling.

I kinda feel the same way after traveling to LA to see Beyer last weekend and he played a minimal glitch techno set(mad eye style). I liked it and all but it didnt blow me away like he has in the past.. Im not surprised though b/c all his production has been in thta direction.

alot goes into how 'banging' a djs set is.

alot of the banging has to do with the venue and the sound system.

yeaha beyer has gone ultra-swank.... but that doesnt mean it cant be presented hard.

Alright MOST of his set was minimal.Even in the second hour he would pick it up and then go back to a more stripped down track. Overall it was mellow and alot slower than ANY other Beyer set Ive heard.Sorry Im not a pro at message boards :doh:

sounds like he was just playing to the crowd. LA is not germany...

It is very underground, unfortunatley because there are no media outlets such as a radio station that cater to it. It's hard for kids to get into something when they are not exposed to it. But Gil is right, when DJ's come to NY they usually end up havign flight shares in philly or bosotn, or chicago etc. So while we only get the big names and its rare, we do get them. And I do agree The minimal sound is unbearbale when I want to dance to some floor jackin beats at prime time!

Hey man, he just played here in NYC last Thursday and his entire set was bangin....I dont think I heard him play one single minimal record at all ;)

Actually most of his set was bangin, but a lil after u guys left around 3 am ish he started to bring it down with some minimal. Not super bleepy but he did brign it down since kids were annihilated!!! :clap:

In LA he only played 2 hours and opened for Robbie Rivera. :roll: So Im sure that is one reason it was mostly minimal. Towards the end he started playing harder stuff then he was done. I was just pissy b.c I didnt get my fix.More like a BIG TEASE.Would have made much more sense to have him close. Any way I didnt mean to turn this into an Adam Beyer thread. :crackup:

one thing that i think is great is that, sure techno is a smaller field in the us, and drum n bass and progressive is ruling all over, but look at the good part of that.

drum n bass djs are a dime a dozen. ten gajillion of them all over and most can't mix for shit.

if yer one of two techno djs in your region, then you have a niche that isn't overfilled.

kinda nice really.

i would rather be one of a handful of techno djs than one in a gajillion of any other genre.

The techno scene in my town is damn good. You just have to work for it.

same here. sure techno is small in the midwest USA, but it is well loved by many people.

and ****, we just had surgeon here on a sunday for five dollars and 150 people went off their heads for hours, so i really can't complain. :) :) :)

We need to educate the kids. Not look for the 21+ year old. The kids is what it´s all about.

Techno needs an image campaign.

Hiphop has the image of being tuff and bling bling and fast cars.

Techno has the image of being... well for scrawny wanna-be intellectuals with glasses who don´t get chicks
