My mate got one the other day that is well good - almost like an Ipod, but minidisc so it has a line in you can record onto. The discs for it are 1gb a piece, and they're only about 6 or 7 quid. I think the whole setup, player, a few discs, usb lead and software to transfer mp3's to/from a computer, and a 3 year insurance plan, cost £100. Not bad at all I thought.
well then you are prob trying to play them on bust minidisk players.Quote:

buy from amazon tho.
using on linear pcm mode is about 1.5mb/sec sample rate
check this for sonys spec

That player my friend got recently was one of those Sony Hi-MD things. They are really quite good, if I was going to buy a personal stereo type device I think thats what I would get. The gigabyte discs are definately adequate in terms of storage, but for me its the ability to record for hours and hours and hours that make them worth the money.
mini disc is crap for sound quality!!!!!!! ever play one through an osciliscope?(sp?)
LinearPCM/1.4Mbps (more than cd/wav sample rate) and at this you get 1 hrs. 34 min on the 1gb disc.
i doubt that will be crap quality.
ive used the normal minidiscs on lp for yrs and it sounds totally fine...
but the new ones on HD-Standard will be better im sure.
i may try it through a scope at work at different sample rates and compare it with a wav.....but my ears dont notice the diff.......thats all that matters really tho.
you can doubt all you want bro, but a mini disc is CRAP quality. try using one for your masters and you will find out! the wave is SO INCONSISTENT when viewed on a spectragraph. a record will go smoothly up and down with round curves. a CD will go smoothly up and down with square curves. a mini disc will go up down and all over the place with no consistent curving. don't take my word for it. analyze the wave yourself and see. even the ear can tell the diference. listen to an MD and then a CD and if you still don't hear the tinny, flimsy quality of the MD compared to a dat or cd, then you should ask glenn for the number of that ears specialist.
are these facts from the new HD-MD or the md's that were about yrs ago?

f*** it though...i should just use an old cassette recorder for that...the hiss and crackle will only intensify his crow-ish evil...
A portable mini disk recorder and mic is great for recording interesting sounds when out and about.
My mic is so sensitive it's ridiculous.... I gotta figure out a way to be able to attach it to my clothing without it picking up the sound of cloth of cloth rubbing.. or cloth on mic rubbing...Quote:

The new Hi-md minidisk players can record at the same bit & sample rate as CD's.
i will peep it!

The Hi-MDs can record with high quality at the best setting, but on low setting it can record for something like 45 hours! Thats pretty banging if you ask me. Maybe the recording isnt perfect, but I reckon it's still better than my walkman! And it wont be any worse than a low quality mp3 on an ipod. Maybe MD is not good for sending your masters to the pressing plant, but I always thought it was primarily meant as a personal music player, something you could take on the train or whatever.
yup and take to gigs , plug in and get yer set recorded then listen to it on the way home/at the after party...
Yep - Have the same prob. But I agree with Dirty Bass on that. Minidisk walkman with mike/line in, cost me £80 from my mate with is plent less than protable Dat and far better than a cassette walkman. I'll take it all the people who are whinging that they're crap won't be downloading the samples I'm gonna put online next week, that I've recorded with one in the park and a protests etc... :wicked:Quote:

But if portability is what u want tose 1gb MD's do look a little sexy.
I used to have the problem with a couple of players that would get "bass shock" and that would stop the recording process but i found if i put the player on a jumper or coat that would sort out the problem.

i'll be in indonesia for a couple months later this summer...minidisk recorder could be pretty awesome for getting some source material there...
It would appear that the ipod has devoured the minidisk.
MD's rock!
They're great value for money, Sony sound quality is spot on, you can record and do what the f&ck you want with them and I like the fact that I can still have a collection of disks with which to fumble about with whilst I'm driving my car!!! ;)
When you fill up a disk (1GB takes abit of doiing with atrac3) you can then use another, rather than have to start deleting sh&t like you do with MP3 players.
