i'm bored of it already. They seem to have locked down a formula too quickly
if anyone can point me to exciting stuff i'd be most appreciative
I know what you mean, there is lots of samey stuff about.
That Markomen mix is sickness incarnate though.
used to listen to it years ago, agree that most of it sounds way too formuleric these days, still some sick tracks about though
that Night track from Benga is a beast despite it getting rinsed everywhere
Skream is alright. All about MC Buffalo at the Dub Step awards though.
too much of it now is standard heavy bass wobble blah blah, imo of course!
Thanks lads! it would appear that I have come to the right place!! This is all new to me. My mate Muc plays a lot of dubstep,i remember the first set I saw him play, the bass made me all silly. Thanks again!!

10. Apocolypse - Kommanasmuk (dub)
11. Prism - Starkey - Starksound 2 (dub)
Prism - starkey - is the song. Love the transition between Apocolypse and Prism. When Prism takes over that's when the magic happens. I guess for me at this moment this would be a good way to put it: "There are many stars in this mix but Prism is more like the sun, and when the sun shines that stars disappear."
20. Dem Nah Like Me - Ghislain Poirier - Shockout
21. Cannot be Straightened - Bass Clef - Blank Tapes
Also really enjoy "dem nah like me" sounds great, gets me movin' and it's cool. Number 21. is different then any other track on this list imo, every time I hear it I like it more and more..
I wont be on MSN for another couple of days till i get the laptop up and running again. My addy is sidviscus@hotmail.com
Anyone know where I can get 16. Come to Life - Drop the lime (dub) on vinyl from????? I must have it!
it's funny, because as with all genres, the djs can shape the image of what people think of the genre as a whole.
for me, the width and breadth of dubstep right now is far-reaching, and not at all limited to the party-tune, dancefloor-smashing wobble business that people are seeing as representative of all dubstep.
some artists who are crossing techno/dubstep boundaries (or are just immensely good):
2562
pinch
appleblim
gatekeeper
kode 9
geiom
pangea
untold
shackleton
peverelist
overcast radio
mala (digital mystikz)
benga
likhan
TRG
bombaman
reso
skream
elemental
i could go on for days, as there are bigger names and also lesser known talent that are really pushing new sounds every day, it's just that those aren't necessarily what gets caned on the dancefloor.
evidently the last DMZ was pretty techno-influence heavy tho, by all accounts, so trust me when i say that dubstep may have some formulaic things happening within it, but those formulas DEFINITELY do not define the sound at all.
good places to find mixes:
www.dubstepforum.com
www.barefiles.com
i also gotta do some blatant self promotion and point to my last studio mix, Retrospection, as an example of what happens when techno and dubstep meet and have a smoke.
also peep my archives for my dubstep.fm radio show: http://www.dubstep.fm/djshiva
i tend to play all over the place with the radio show, so you never really know what's gonna happen, but i have been a techno girl for years, so expect that influence in a big way.
anyway, i just wanted to pop on here and let people know that there is pure gold in the dubstep scene, but it takes paying attention, as with any genre. every genre has its formulas, but no genre should ever truly be defined by them.
@djshiva
thanks for the post
and for the namedrops
have somestuff from some of them like - kode 9, benga, skream. I'll check out what I can find..
cheers
oh how could i forget scuba? keep an eye out for the new album "a mutual antipathy". have only heard a few tracks off it, both exceptional, and by all accounts from those who have heard it...it's the bees knees.
check out me niga screenager , best music ive heard for a while.
http://www.myspace.com/dascreen
Loefah - Goat Stare/Root has to be the heaviest tune of all time.
I havent listened to dubstep in about 18 months but getting back into it now. Like shiva said there is plenty of room for crossing over between techno & dubstep.
Check out her Retrospection mix.
cmplete pretentious drivel.
boring garbage which has no place being linked to techno.
thats pretty much just summed up whats wrong with techno today.. tunnel vision .. what is techno anyway? and who's to say what can and can't be linked to it? Isn't that the whole point of it? alien sounds and styles..embracing new ideas and creating new angles.. Buddy Holly only knew 3 chords.. A,D and E.. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who's only into buddy holly whereas the music of buddy holly and the crickets make up a small yet important blip on the tapestry that is rock n roll..
(excuse my cheese) ;)
(was refering to the words 'no place being linked with techno')
Having a narrow vision of what's musically acceptable has no place being linked with Techno.
Yep, thats what i was trying to say in my rambling lofty buddy hollyesque above post
Not to say that people have to like dubstep (or buddy holly)... It can be pretty generic and predictable as can any 'genre', but i've heard tracks that have knocked me for six and its influenced some producers of aforementioned 'techno' which is where it gets exciting as its another route to explore.. new territory, ideas and production techniques to be applied to other stuff. Viva Mongrel music
DJ Shiva just nailed it.Quote:

Im on a discovery mission at the moment as i used to be one of the most musically narrow minded people i knew. Im trying to break out of that as it is just not cool. Dubstep has got my attention at the moment and starting this thread was the best move I've made in a while, because the links to mixes and information you guys have given me is amazing!
Thanks to all! Keep it coming, but please- don't let this thread turn into a squabble. Please!
Mala has made some great tunes... has a really organic sound. I like this one a lot:
http://www.discogs.com/release/885964
Also, Skream's essential mix from last year was brilliant... still waiting for some of the tunes to get released. those kids do love their dubplates...
I'm pretty sure it was a digital release on Trouble & Bass records:
http://www.discogs.com/release/1163844
Check Juno Download... it should still be there. You're getting your limes and lemons mixed up!
 hahahahahah! Lime, feck sake! Yeah i found the digital one, but i'm looking for vinyl, im thinking it isn't out on plastic at all.... poo!
wasteman?
Does that word carry outside hackney?
Bare nang.
if you don't like it, that's cool. i could care less.
but when you make blanket declarations about the value of the music as a whole, or act like you are the supreme dictator of all that is techno, declaring how dubstep has no place anywhere near techno...
...well...you sound like an asshole.
i am not getting defensive. i am calling you out for being a pompous dick. there's a difference.
