audiophile 24/96. budget soundcard which delivers the goods. i think they are down to £100-120 now, i purchased mine just over a year ago at £150. go to soundcontrol mate or even try academy of sound. (both in leeds) or you could even try big deal in leeds you might be able to pick one up for about £70 (2nd hand)

in saying that, you could ignore that recomendation because i think a new soundcard has just hit the market at something like £70 and it offers 24bit 96khz recording (which is what you want/need) so it might be a good idea to give that a blast. i will try find out the details for that card and i will let you know.

do you really need to spent £100+ on a sound card?

i'm just using one that was about £15 i think (soundblaster 128). not great but it seems to do the job

would an upgrade make much difference?

if your using software synth's then yes, the soundcard you use will make a hell of a difference

It was voted the number one budget soundcard by future music readers the last couple o years.

"The Terratec DMX 6fire represents the budget end of the market, and for that it cannot be faulted. Its bringing 24 bit 96 khz operation to the mass market" - Future Music magazine

a difference in which way? in the quality of the synth or the load on the CPU?

the quality of the sound, and in some cases, it will take some strain off the cpu, but the difference in sound quality is amazing

also having real RCA's and not having to f#$% around with those damn annoying kiddie toy 1/8 jacks is a major plus.

the sound will always be the same because the sound is made digitally
The only degredation that ever happens is if you do some D / A conversion

A soft synth with a crappy sound card will sound just as good on cd as a soft synth with the best soudn card money can buy
