    Default Getting a G5.........

So I'm thinking of going for a G5, mainly to run Pro-Tools, but for the benefit of getting a job. Do you think this is a good investment or not?

What about just using PT on a pc, will it work the same?

    Thanks guys!

I replaced my G4 with a G5 right after they hit the market and I feel like it's one of the best things I've blown my money on. It's definitely worth the dough imo. The speeds will completely blow your mind away. My audio exports on the G5 are instant. On the G4 I would have to sit around and wait a few minutes for the export to complete.

And they're so pretty too

I bought a G5 dual 1.8 a while back.. it was ****in nice but it cost me nearly 2k .. I didnt use it for anything except Cubase, which is exactly the same on mac and pc, so i figured i had paid about £1000 extra for some aluminium and a better OS than on pc. So i sold it and went back to PC with a grand in my pocket.. and to be honest, if you are only using it for one task - its exactly the same!

But if i was using loads of software, and actually used the OS at all i would probably have stuck with it as it much nicer than pc really.

But for pro tools i dont know. Ive heard its a bit shakey on PC

PCs only have one advantage over Macs; the vast about of smaller programs written by developers. Although the peer-to-peer software is pretty much even now.

I have used PCs for he last 15 years and would swop any day if wasn't a matter of having to buy a Mac software. Hooky copies of PC software seem easy to come across than Mac, not that I'm suggesting anything of the sort but its worth noting for the casual home user (who I personally shouldn't have to pay licence fees for software)

you think a dual 1.8Ghz, with 2GB of RAM will be enough with the G5?

i might buy it this week, any thoughts?

my g5 dual 1.8 was much faster than my 2.8 pc.. much much much faster. you wont have any worries about speed, but i dont think the 2ghz is much more expensive now so it might be worth it for that little extra bit of future-proofing..

Kevin groman: Compact? are you looking at the same thing i am? its ****ing HUGE! ;)

    Dude.... :dontevengothere:

I'm a Linux evangelist to the death.. but I would shoot myself in the temple before I'd use it for audio stuff.... sorry it just ain't there. ;)

Give me ableton live or logic on linux - oh, and driver support... low latency etc.... - and then maybe we'll talk

I think there is some confusion between power mac and imac

    imac = compact

    power mac
