the kick is really lacking power in the mix and the sample is a little too forward in the mix, it's overpowering everything else

I seem to be having a big problem with that at the minute and the more i reinforce beats the weaker the overall track gets. Seems the harder I try the further away from my goal I get.
I've tried compression but it just doesn't make any sense. to my ears as everything sounds so much quieter when compressed.
