nepotism :) and totally.
piss and the vultures will pay... coming soon
I dont care for waht Jules & Fergie are playing...I'm sure we'll never hear them play underground techno. I imagine they only play tracks by Umek, Bailey or tracks with bigger breakdowns. I give them respect for even playing techno on a fri & sat night to the weekend wannabes.
Besides, we've all made bad musical judgements in the past (me anyway...I used to like [and still do like] hardcore). I think the more you listen to a certain type of music, the more interested you become. We all love techno so much because we can all relate it to being inside the club and dancing our tits off, or stood behind dex in our rooms, knowing full well that we're going to be the next Jeff or Richie. For someone thats never been to a techno night, it'll be harder for them to appreciate it.
My issue with the techno is the lack of new talent that gets promoted. I get the impression that the direction of Techno is run by a select number of people (think distributers, agencies&clubs).
Tis a good time for all things music. Most of us have access to computers that can produce quality tracks. The one thing that always needs to happen is proggression, maybe in 5 years techno will have warped into a new style.
see what you are saying detfella, but i don`t have a shred of respect for fergie & jules.
Hmm, just got into this one.
The major concern with me right now and has been for the past, oh, I dunno, 3/4 years is education. Most people just think Techno is music for drugged up ravers going boom, boom (oh how we love you Mr 4/4), boom.
Techno is a lot more than this - there are so many sub-genres of Techno that are abstract and beautiful and cleverly progressive etc.
I want to do this - promote the other styles of Techno that many people are not aware of.
Hmm, challenging or what ?!?
In a nutshell :
Narrowmindness
Cheesy distributers/ promotors/ Mags and media with they're own aggenda/ Friends in "high places"
It should b about who good u do it and not who u know.
Z
Djax-Up Beats rec, Minimalistix Rec, Holtzplatten Rec, Invasion Rec, Fined Rec., bla bla bla
A think techno is very up its on arse if u dont mind me saying.
Cant complain about the quality tho.

I agree techno can be up it's arse, but then again most genres have the same problem look at VIP style house or whatever, where if you're not beautiful you probably won't get in....
I don't think it has that many major problems though - i think the scene is quite healthy and even though in a way I don't like the commercialisation of it, it can't be bad thing when dj's like steve thomas or andy farley are bigging up dave the drummer tunes, why shouldn't some of the very underground guys make some headway and money, which in turn will help the scene thrive. i don't think the scene in the Uk will ever get to the heights it reaches in europe though, because over there they have 10-20,00 capacity parties where about the biggest it gets over here is probably atomic jam......
techno is not up it`s own arse, maybe some of the people who are passionately into it are.
every genre suffers this though, maybe techno more than others.... imo techno is a specialist genre, most people into techno, it`s their life, not just music they like to listen to.... i love every aspect of it, the music itself, and the scene in general, i dream about techno all the time, it`s my no1 passion in life.
i think this goes for most on this board too.
spot on john, if there is a problem with the techno community it is that they are too passionate about the music (if that is a bad thing).......
as for my issues, well there all pretty much listed...
1. R1 (and MTV btw, watch it late nite, shocking!!) minus John Peel
(could be a hawtin track lol..... )
2.Godskitchen etc.....
Distribution is a very good point as well....
\"When I die I am going to heaven, for i have spent my time in hell.....\"
what tracks do they play on mtv? didn`t know techno even got mentioned on there, i only watch it for jackass & the osbournes.
i've seen vids for forklift (beltram), la la land (green velvet) and some laurent garnier stu on mtv..
anyways, there are two techno related issues that irritate me:
1) lazy producers - people who think taking a four bar sample of whatever and sticking a kick drum, a ride n some compression over it is material worth releasing, i won't name any names but i've heard some tracks lately and just thought...you lazy f****rs..
2) bandwagonning - people who want to use techno to be some kind of superstar hero, want to produce it but do it in the quickest, easiest and most obvious way and use it to be accepted and loved....
i know of people who use foreign names to dj under to make themselves sound more ...wait for it....exotic???!!!??!
i think techno is a way of life, and you have to live it to fully appreciate it.
whether you listen to it, play it or produce it, getting into techno is usually a natural progression, and whe people get into it for the wrong reasons......WHY I'D JUST LIKE TO...(hands in a throttling position).
well, got that of my chest.
I just think that the overall genre of techno has exploded immensly in the past 3 years. It used to be hard banging techno, and thats about it I guess. But nowadays, you have groovy techno, hard banging techno, trancey techno, all these forms of techno. The problem is, people are having a hard time adjusting to this. They focus on producers they relied on before, but they don't realize these producers are moving on.
While some hard techno proudcer from yesteryear may be on the housey tip now, there is surely someone coming through the ranks to take his place. Techno is in a time of change, and too many people are paying attention to the types of techno that don't interest them, therefore they become jaded.

Which leads me onto another problem in techno - people who think it is, or has ever been, "hard banging techno and thats about it". I know a lot of these people are young and are being conditioned by clubs by Atomic Jam and Orbit into thinking there should be no variety in techno, that it should just be hard pummeling loops and majestic breakdowns with even harder comebacks...for this I blame the DJs and promoters who take the easy option and continue to play music/book acts that have never and will never show a scrap of innovation...but "know how to get a crowd going". F u c k yeah, have someone like Mike Parker or Kunio Asai down there and the kids will be crying for their mummys cos the music is actually stimulating their minds for once. ooooh, scary.
classic situation:
"what music do u like"
"techno"
"oh....... Tekno Tekno Tekno?!?"
some people just need educating...........
thats the point john they don't play techno! But they claim that it is.... its all trance bollox..... they really are warping peoples minds.Originally Posted by techfunk 02

Honestly since only '99. I guess the line about hard bangin techno isn't nessecarily true, but I still am standing by the rest of what I have to say.Originally Posted by Patrick
