One thing about old skool rave tunes that you rarely get these days, and the thing about them that really moves me, is the juxtaposition of hard, dark heavy bass grooves with upligting elements.. Like a lot of old rave tunes are just a breakbeat, a 909, and a phat, raw analogue bassline for a few minutes, and then it will completely change tack into a piano riff or an uplifting synth riff or vocal for the break and then kick back into the dark filth again and it really messes with your head chopping and changing like that. Most tracks these days sort of forge a groove based on a single emotion or feeling and it doesn't change for the whole tune and you end up with techno sets that really dont explore a range of emotions like older music might have, even though they are technically and sonically more diverse.
