Also, if i have active, do i need a mixer to turn the gains up etc, this has just been pointed out to me....

well, i have the active tapco s8. i do not need to use amixer in order to make them loud enough. i mean, that's why there active ;)
i am very happy with them, but there are some people here who obviously don't like them, so you should probably be a little patient what others have to say.
we have the fostex pm1's. they are rather tasty. stereo imaging on the is imaculate. they were recomended as the best monitors for our money from digital village. they are way better than the alesis.

i definitly cant reccomend these Fostex PM-2's enough.. they were about 450 and sound top notch for that price. They compare favourably to my last PMC monitors in all but stereo imaging (but they still have better stereo than most at this price range) and sound way more defined on the top than my KRK K-ROKS did.
Small monitors wise if you hunt around you may be able to fine some second hand Mackie 626's at somewhere around your budget - which would also be a wise choice in my opinion..
jimmah!
Ive heard the PM1's are good too for a few quid less if you dont mind less power..
Athough they do sound great for the money im not entirly convinced about the quality of some of the components in the fostex ones (although exterior build quality is 100%) but i know it to be very much superior to any of the tapco/behringer stuff which is about as cheapo as it gets (just ask digital village how many returns they get) and the sound outweighs most at the pricerange anyway so..
jimmah!
i know not many people are fans of these but i still swear by my M-audio Studiophile bx8's
upcoming releases : Templ8r 1, Advanced 025, Humanoid 7, Emetic 013 - www.djscottgray.co.uk
i need some too, been looking at events tr6/8 to replace my mini hifi
Thanks! Im so excited i cant sit still now

Try the yamaha msp5s.
Very impressive for the money.
They are active too.
around 250.
or the wharfedale proactive 8.1s even cheaper, active and a fantastic sound.
I cant comment in the case of the fostex speakers.
Right, think a trip to Digital Village woudlnt go a miss. Least i have a little background knowledge on what im looking for etc.
R.I.P JOHN PEEL ...........
get the mackies second had if u can tash. if not i can get you a pair of fostex's for 280 instead of 350 from digital village if they are still getting them at a good price.
gis a text and tell me closer to your birthday if you choose the fostex.

Mackies rule, sound excellent. I hated the Events when I heard them but agree with everyone more or less on the Fostex stuff from what I've heard.
Can't comment on the Behringer stuff but after component failures in a load of other Behringer stuff I've had I'd avoid them for anything in a critical audio path ...
