i started out with the first versions of fruity loops, it evolved into a much more powerful package now though, but id reccomend reason to someone who is starting out as its powerful software with a logical layout that will helkp you get used to routing of instruments, eq/levels, synthesis etc its all there from the beggining so a good place to start. easy to pick up the basics over a short time but a powerful programme to learn into then if you decided you wanted to expand you could move to another platform with added possibilities of VST instruments SX,LOGIC, or intergrate reason into either.

the latest version of fruity is really powerful, but you need to invest in some good synths and fx plugins.

    www.kvr-vst.com

excellent resource for all on line vst needs.

synth1 is a must as is triangle 2 and tbl for acid lines. and they're all free

also save up your pennies and get the refex vanguard, awsome synth, and only about £70

Heres some vsti equivelents to popular hardware used in Hard dance:

-Linplug Albino, ReFX Vangaurd for a virus like sound

-Novation V station for the novation sound

    -Audiorealism's Bassline for 303s

-Native Instruments Pro 53 for a prophet

-Disco DSP discovery for a Nord Lead

-ReFX JunoX2 for alpha juno sounds

    -Waldorf A1 for a Micro Q

-RGC Audio Z3ta sounds like a whole bunch synths, phat!

-NI's Kontakt and Battery2 for sample and drummachine

Also highly recomend the additional Vengence soundsets for some of the above as they are all about trance and dance and really show you what can be done with these vsti
