    Default The Listening Club

Ok, well, to try to broaden peoples horizons a little, and to show that techno can be more than just Boom-Tish Boom-Tish (Although there is nothing wrong with the Boom-Tish).

I thought we could have a Suggested Listening Area, where people could recommend a new album or single release, or a particularly special Live PA or Mix, that is forward thinking, and then we could discuss, kinda like a book club.

Thanks to XFive for this Idea.

Online links to the albums or singles can be posted here.

Steve Reich "Music for 18 Musicians."

it's not techno...it's modern classical, but you'll notice the rhythmic ideas and use of LFO (all done with acoustic instruments) is crazy techno...

    My first recommendation

William Burroughs - Dead City Radio
(with Sonic Youth, John Cale, Chris Stein and more)
There are audio links down the page

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...985349-1984459

Without Burroughs, his writings and the Cut Up technique developed in the 50`s, there may never would have been the sampling and scratching of hip hop, and the early collage of futuristic sounds that was techno. His writings and philosophies, align very much with techno in so many ways, and his audio recordings and collaborations are fantastic.

    Good sticky Steve

Here are a couple of my suggestions, all jazz, being thats probably the one genre I listen to just as much, if not more so than Techno:

Charlie Hunter Trio - Friends Seen And Unseen
Medeski, Martin, and Wood - End of the World Party (Just in Case)
Cal Tjader - The Best of the Concord Years

I don't ever play CDs on repeat... but the Charlie Hunter one got me good.

    Enjoy ;)

Yeah, this is a great album. For anyone listening to it for the first time you really need a bit of patience as on the face of it it can sound sort of 'samey'. Listen to it for a while or all the way through and it is a very rewarding listen

While Burroughs cut up style's influence in the world of literature is undeniable, I think its a bit of a murky association to draw it to music. John Cage and Pierre Schaeffer were messing with taking found sounds long before Naked Lunch was even a thought. Burroughs was just a famous resonating point for an idea that had been bouncing around human consciousness for sometime.

Aha, there you go, Burroughs is on there.
Should have Gysin on there too, as really, he invented the cut up process.

the main section of Burroughs is actually a spoken word piece with him explaining how it began and he does credit Gysin ;)
