Plug in overload in cubase

I have a 2.2Ghz machine.. I know my pc's and I know how to keep
the pc itself running fast. but lately my current track is pushing cubase
to using about 200mb of memory. I am only about 3 compressors,
2 delta filters, a pitch shifter, a step filter, some reverbs and an edge
filter for subbass (the last one seems to kill it right over the top)..

like i can hear the audio bursting out a few secs at a time and
the system totally locks up...

is there any specific way to use plugins.. like optimising the way
you sequence them ?

is it possible the m-audio asio drivers im using as well?

Aren't Pitch shifters CPU hogs? Reverbs can be too, Use them on sends if it suits. What compressors? filters etc? Could be a Denormals issue or something?

am i better applying the pitch shift directly to the wav then rather
than real time processing ? im using the waves c1 compressor.
the waves reverb, plus cubases generic reverbs. im also using the cubase
generic step filter, and the delta filter.

im using the reverbs on inserts. does it make much difference ?

Yeah, best of processing the pitch shifting, no point in having it live if your automating or something?

Using reverb on sends is better as it saves you CPU and it's better than having lots of different reverbs, Unless your using different ones for creative reasons or something. But if your using the same reverb preset and on each insert on each channel, then just use sends. :)

But I think it's a denormals issue, looking at you first typed again. The C1 & Waves verb(Rverb)(What Waves Verb)usually work fine for me, same with the Cubase filters etc, what VST's are you using aswell? Bypass & Switch all the stuff off until you find the culprit or, something. :lol: :)

yeah the waves pitchshift is a monster if thats what you are using.. i can only run 2 on my 3.2ghz machine..

I find screaming "AAARRGH!" at the computer helps. Same goes for when a big project opens in cubase. Apparently computers can sense ur frantic button-clicking and speed up accordingly
