engineering sound is so cool now. it is even more creative than ever before. it was always an intergral creative element to a track - more than often given credit.
but now it is mind-blowing.

techno is constantly re-writing the rule-books about "mastering" a sound. just work with any one of the old rock engineers to see just how different mastering is now.

in saying that, there is no right or wrong here.

what i am referring to is just how much importance the mastering process is to the whole creative process. It has dramatic effects on how a track is written and as you become more involved in the whole technique of mastering, you actually develop your sound further. It adds the flavour or the ambience and more importantly it adds some soul from that time.

My experience has taught me that with techno you really should master your tracks keeping in mind that it will be played loud on a system with a sub.
This is the most important difference straight away. Your studio should include a sub network in order to reference these lower frequencies. (this is never a consideration with rock music).
But, ultimately you will benefit from testing on a PA.

Conclusion?
As this article suggests, you should check your sound on a variety of systems. It mentions other home stereo units and cars or different speakers. Cool. Don't forget to check it on a BIG system too! Include the low end even if the "norm" is to cut everything off below 60hz.
