Default Recording Vinyl To Hard Drive

    any tips ?

    was gonna do the following........

    use a DJM300 & keep the eq's at 0

    use a fesh stylus

clean each 12 before i record it

make AT LEAST 2 back up copys for external drives on our network

i'll be using an EMU 0404 to record in at 16bit 44.1khz

but ANY other hints or tips would be very much appreciated.

    cheers, pete

Waves do some nice plug ins for cleaning up your vinyl recordings.

I'd record at 24/96 and then downsample them all afterward.
Hell I think that card can even do 192khz..

I personally use a standalone turntable preamp.. they're pretty cheap and have the RIAA eq curve builtin to them... but what you are using should do the job too.

Do not bother with the 192khz sampling rate. You actually stand to get more errors that way because you are trading performance for speed. Even 96khz is probably unnecesary. However, recording at a higher bitrate (ie 24 instead of 16) will definitely be in your interest.

when i've tried to record vinyl at 96/24, it seems to pick up some annoying high frequencies that shouldn't be there (it's probably exposing the limitations of my needles). but 44/24 sounds good.

Also don't use a brand new needle as they need to be worn in slightly from new

still cant decide on what bit/sample rate to use..

does dithering from say, 24/96 to 44.1/16 have much impact on sound quality if it was to be used on cdjs ?

its not like most clubs have belter pa's anyways

if you record at 16 bit, you really have to work to get it as close to 0 as possible, otherwise you get a poor signal-to-noise ratio.

if you record at 24 bit you have a lot more dynamic range to work with, so you don't have to worry as much about recording hot. record peaking anywhere from -12 to -6, do noise/click reduction, normalize to 0, then dither down. while both techniques will end up with 16 bits, chances of getting a clean sound all the way down to the lower bits are better if you start at 24.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but are there ANY labels that release on both vinyl and cd? I want to stock up on properly cd mastered versions for mixing digitally rather than try and re-record them from vinyl.

I know Tresor does and a few others but it would be nice to make an indepth list of unmixed cd releases for everyone...

think i'll go for 24/96. the 0404 card will go to 192 khz, but i dont know if its worth the extra drive space..

i can dither down with Sound Forge couldnt i ?

never had to deal with this dithering thing.. new territory
