Even though Hawtin is great the image he gave off was slightly nerdier, and that does not exactly appreal to the masses... The other large problem is media. Yes Hip hop has the image, but what drives that image? You have Clear Channel which is a huge monopoly. ( I know because I used to work for them, shh) Anyway, they own most of the major radio stations here, and many of the large venues. And since they are so tight with MTV what happen is.. You have some genric shit Jay Z makes, it is plastered all over the radio stations, then played on MTV 6 times a day, over and over. Guess what? People see it right in front of them and they accept it, and that image becomes apart of their culture. If Techno, or even electronic music in general had real media outlets such as radio then you would see a larger community evolve. Instead, word of mouth spreads through kids who have been in he scene for many years and you might get some new blood here and there. That is not the way for a scene to grow & thrive...
