That's why records sound weak if you accidentally plug your turntable into the Line socket instead of the Phono socket. The Phono socket runs the signal through an EQ curve which boosts the bass right back up. It looses definition in this process - and this is the "warmth" you hear people talking about. Though why this degradation can't be simulated if people really want it is beyond me...
