Define your budget.
For gods sake don`t go for real low end stuff like the edirol or m-audio stuff. Your just throwing money down the can.
I would say the best monitors you can get for good money, would appear to be yorkvilles.

Well he could be doing as bad as me, using my creative inspire 5200 speakers that are mainly intended for 5.1 surround.Originally Posted by dirty_bass

well the alesis m1's served me well for years...
Well, you need to speak to X5ive on here. But yorkville do some very well made (and well reviewed) active nearfields.Originally Posted by SlavikSvensk

Them Yorkvilles look pants, I dont think you can far wrong you some Spirit Absolute 2's second hand if your budget aint massive, quality speakers and really well designed sound wise. I know people that have sold there Mackies to buy another pair of these because they prefer them.
They are passive though but quality for the price.
You fool.
I have absolute 2`s they are good, but the look of a speaker has nowt to do with performance.
After first being informed about the yorkvilles, I made enquiries. and they are indeed very good monitors, with a similar performance to Abs 2`s anyway. Plus they are actives and have switchable filtering.
Bloody great.
And a pair will cost you 250 MAX

Recently had the pleasure of working with these Blue Sky monitors and have to say for the price they are incredible, bit above your range at £399 but well worth looking into if your in the market for some cheap monitors.
someone recommended me those blue sky the other day...been thinking about going for genelec 1029a's instead for more cash at £500. anyone know if they are worth the xtra £?
Don`t do those genelecs.
Unless you are in a nice big studio they are a very harsh and uncomfortable listen.
Really can`t recommend them at all, after half an hour in a small studio with them, you`ll be going mad trying to get the scarey scraping monsters out of your ears.

Hmm, I really wouldn`t bother with those blue sky. 4" drivers are gonna give a terrible bass response unless you get a separate woofer, and for accurate nearfield monitoring, a separate woofer is just really not a good idea.
the fostex PM2`s are pretty cheap as are the pm1`s. I`d go for them if you`ve got that bit extra, or the yorkvilles if you can`t stretch.

Trust me on this one Steve these things are incredible for the money i have used a lot of the more popular low to mid price near fields over the years and these Blue Sky things blow nearly all of them away, very accurate response and not overly harsh sounding (a problem i have with nearly everything else). Personally still prefer my K roks but if your in the market for some nearfields these are well worth an audition.Originally Posted by dirty_bass

Tannoy Reveals or Alesis MkII's
<<<CLASSIFIED>>>
dunno about the reveals, tbh
I have the Tannoy Reveals, they are really good monitors! Really balanced and clean clear sound. Defintly worth checking them out.
