nice reverbs, chorus, delays, good eq... the right samples/synths are essential too i think when trying to get the right minimal sound

Yes , I totally agree with all these things especially the essential part of having a wicked assortment of sounds/samples which is very important in all music. I'm actually really interested in the dynamics of filling the space, which can be very difficult at times but far more rewarding.
