if you understand the relationship between sub bass and kick, i feel you understand techno.

old school henrik b method: put a note on each 16th beat randomly for 2 beats and repeat. Filtered it down and get that no-nonsense bass.

    sorry sometimes I am stupid.

Okay, take one pattern that is say, 16 notes which is 4 beats right? boom boom boom boom. Now, on each of these 16 notes, record a synth note lasting only that 16th note on each of the 16th notes semi-randomly. I often like to do this so that the pattern repeats itself every 2 beats.

It's kind of like arpeggio but doing it yourself.

I did a quick and real simple pattern using the piano roll in Fruity Loops using a VSTi. I always start a track out making a bassline now. I'll double up two or three synths to get it a nice warm tone and filter it down. Once I have that, you just work on the drive from there. Add some kick drums, congas, whatever gets you off and with time it will bang. If it sounds too quirky try taking the bass down an octave or filtering it.

Hope this helps some of you, works for me.

presumably he means play the same midi riff on more than one bass sound simultaneously...

yes that is what he means. loads of people will play the same kick and filter it to sound cleaner.
