Default FX Plug Ins within Cubase SX

    Hey all,

im findin it quite hard to find decent sounding FX plugs in cubase, especially reverb and a phaser unit... What do others use??

The ones i use are mainly TC Native Reverb for the verb, and usually the timeworks phaser unit for the phase, mainly because ive played around with all the others available to me and these two sound the best...

but they still dont sound anywhere near as nice and clean as the standard logic ones which a friend is using....

    Anyone got any suggestions? :D

Gotta say, the phaser is one of the main reasons I switched to Logic!

    ;)

Try the Waves Meta-flanger. It's really rather nice.

The Waves reverbs are good, too.

Waves. Is there ANYTHING they don't do well? :)

    No probs.

Just tried the 'Silver Spike' reverb the other day. It's pretty damn good... Really quite clean. A little bit closer to my ideal sound, perhaps... I'll have to use it some more. And a nice, simple gui.

Didn't do a processor analysis though. I'll have to make up a list of reverbs with a sound quality/processor time ratio at some point. Processor time is getting to be an issue for me :(

If you want that Logic sound, you could try installing it, burning down your track to wav, importing it, applying the effect, and putting it back...

If you can't afford Logic, you could just take the files over to your friend.

If you burn down the rest of the track separately, you can import them both on to separate tracks and hear the result in situ before fixing it. Bit of a pain (!) but might be worth it in the long run. Depending...

    ;)

    OK mate, read these books:

Creative Recording 1: Effects & Processors; Paul White
Modern Recording Techniques; Huber & Runstein

You'll go through a lot of stuff thinking 'I don't need to know this sh*t!' but you'll LOVE me for it in about two months when you get through them and work it all out.

As for the rest, processor time refers to how hard your machine is working. The more proc. time used, the harder your machine works. When it gets too much, your machine will fall over - you'll get clicks and drop-outs in your audio, your interface will respond sluggishly and things will eventually grind to a halt.

Reverb is the most processor-hungry effect, because of what it's trying to do - re-create the effect of millions of echoes from every point on every surface in a room. (This is why you get 'hall' 'cathedral' and so on settings, and room shapes. 'Plate' refers to a method used to emulate this effect used in pre-digital studios, as does 'spring'.)

Remember, all computer programs used to make music rely on the techniques developed for traditional studios on analogue desks. Knowledge of these techniques means more understanding of what you're doing on your PC.

    Good luck mate!
