Default Avatars have to be HOW big now?

Ok maybe I'm new at this internet and unaware of some magic app that compesses jpgs into miniscule sizes, but as far as I can tell, 10kb is FECKING TINY!
I can't even squash a basic black and white image down to less than 20kb, without the image being completley unledgeable...

    Help!

second attempt at this message... just finished one and went to send, asked me to log in again... then my message was lost...ggrr

anyway, I was saying thanks, and I realised I can find pictures on altavista search... but i had been trying to make my own.. in photoshop - resize a jpeg that is 105mm x 90mm and 6kb to 100mm x.... at lowest quality it ends up being 24kb?

P.S. Surely you can have Avatars of any size if you link to an off-site avatar?

There are no more off-site avatars. Gotta upload them. Best way to make it smaller is change it from a 24 bit to 8 bit picture.
You go in hard, and you go in fast.

Is there a reason for this?

    OK, lets do a Step-by-Step...

    It's quite straightforward.

    Go to http://www.gimp.org

Because GIMP is open source, it's available for lots of different operating systems.

You probably run Windows, so click on "GIMP for Windows"...

    Click on "Automated Installer"...

This will take you to the GIMP for Windows page.

    Click on "Download"...

OK, there are two things you NEED to download.

First, you need to download the GTK libraries...

This will bring up a "mirrors" page - DON'T PANIC! - It's just SourceForge trying to find somewhere nearer to you, so that you will download it quicker.

There's one in Kent in the UK, so if you're a brit, choose that...

Run this file. Follow the on-screen prompts.

    Next, download the GIMP itself...

(You'll have to pick a mirror again...)

Run this file. Follow the on-screen prompts.

Finally, you may wish to download the GIMP help files, because it's quite a big bit of software, and help files are always useful.

    Enjoy ;)

    You got it.

Unless you have a burning desire to download stuff from Japan instead.
