My Fruity Studio used to let me run 3 korg legacys at onece with compression and acid lines and now it stuggles with anything more than a muon tau andf stutters like buggery. Can anyone pehaps suggest why?

    Many thanks.

sounds like you either need to

    A: defrag

    or

B: check your backgrounds to see if there is anything "dodgy" running and eating up all your cpu

probably just poor general pc maintenance, free up your memory, see what background programs are running like rhythm say's, check for spyware, adware, virus', trojans, empty temp folders, do a defrag, uninstall any programs you dont use anymore etc etc. I've found since i started looking after my PC a bit more and tidying everything up inside it re files, folders, samples, getting rid of samples i really dont use or want etc that my machine runs alot more efficient. Nothing worse than a slow PC when trying to do tracks

your system wont let you close anything you need to run the o/s. everything else can be turned off. then get your self a program (cant remember what its called... anyone?) but you just run this program, choose what processes you want at startup and it only lets them run each time you turn on your pc.

post a list of processes here and we should be able to tell you whats legit. KILL ANYTHING WITH DIALER IN IT!!!

when your working on your music, disconnect from the net of possible, if your disconnected, also stop your firewall and anti virus programs.

but only do this if you can disconnect from the net, and dont forget to start them again before you reconnect.

also shut down any programs such as messangers etc.

have you checked your soundcard settings to makes ure nothings changed there

Problem is that this doesn't display all running processes and threads. For some redicilous reason MS have decided to hide certain processes from task manager. It's easy as setting a flag in your code to hide your process, and obviously spyware and even other intentionally installed programs will hide there happily stealing CPU of cycles. One way you can check if this is happening is by looking at your "System Idle" process. If it's near 98% most of the time whilst nothing else is loaded (especially stuff like audio plugins which eat your CPU for breakfast) you're a happy camper. If it's jumping all over the show you can be sure something's not right.

My reccomended course of action for fixing this will be placed in a new thread since it'll be of use to almost any computer user. Bassically you should reinstall everything then ghost an image on a separate partion for later restoration. If you don't know what I'm talking about you should read my thread.

ive had simillar problems in the past and found that using free pluggins that have bugs generally slow things down.so i steer clear of them.Allso found using a computer solely for music with no internet connection totally cured the problems i was having.

    Start - Run - msconfig - startup

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

check this list, and turn off all the programs not needed, this is a good way to speed up your computer at start-up
