That's a bit contradicting with music being art with an aural medium.Wouldn't call it music myself. Art maybe, but not music.
You said you like that one best Jay?!
why make the thing so difficult? music is someone expressing themselves in a way that can be heard, it could be spoken owrd or a nose flute and a rubber band, the expression is the key.
p.s. all these "improvements" to the site and still no edit button eh????
PSoken word isn`t music.
It`s spoken word.
More tied to literature and prose than music.
Although some rappers would like to think otherwise.
Solitary by nature.
Isolation is the gift.

Music is a load of bollocks.

Speech is just that
Speech.
You can analyse it all you want, and stick a cherry on it, philosphise on it, smoke crack and convince yourself whatever you like.
It`s still speech.
That`s why there is a word in the dictionary for what happens when we communicate with language.
It`s called speech.
speech: n.
1.
1. The faculty or act of speaking.
2. The faculty or act of expressing or describing thoughts, feelings, or perceptions by the articulation of words.
2. Something spoken; an utterance.
3. Vocal communication; conversation.
4.
1. A talk or public address: “The best impromptu speeches are the ones written well in advance” (Ruth Gordon).
2. A printed copy of such an address.
5. One's habitual manner or style of speaking.
I love spoken word me.
Use it a lot myself in recordings.
Still, I don`t pretend it`s music.

it sounds pretty musical in "come out" (steve reich)

but of course that's manipulated speech, so i guess it could be used by either side of the argument...

You can use speech musically of course.
Most of the great writers of the late 20th century dealt with spoken word.
Becket, Burroughs and Bukowski, would have spit to have their art lumped in with music.
It was writing, or prose to them. Routines.
Nothing wrong with that, but I think they are correct, speech is of writing and it deserves it`s own form of art.

but db, i'm assuming you've heard "come out?" there's nothing there except spoken word, and it's definately music, not literature...
