Think of a torrent file as kinda like an invitation. You click on it, and your torrent client directs your machine to the places where people are sharing media.
It's simple enough to download media with torrents. Go snag a copy of Azureus at http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
Install it and then, whenever you open a torrent file, just tell it what directory you want to save it in.
