    Techno: Detroit's Gift to the World

    January 2003 – June 2004

    Detroit Historical Museum's Stark Hall

    History is often thought of as a series of events that occurred a very long time ago. The truth is, history is also what happened yesterday, five minutes ago, and in fact, today's events will be tomorrow's history. With this in mind the Detroit Historical Museum has partnered with the originators of Techno to share the story of their music. This groundbreaking exhibit will trace Techno's early beginning from its Detroit roots to its emergence as a global sensation.

    An ambitious new exhibit – the world’s first on the subject -- that celebrates a style of music born in Detroit that has kept the world dancing for more than 20 years.

    Learn the straight story of how Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, four young men from metro Detroit, created and developed this electronic style of dance music and trace its early beginnings from local Detroit clubs to its emergence as a global sensation.

    The exhibit will feature fliers, posters, records, cds, equipment and much more. This is just a small sample of what the exhibit will contain.

    On January 18, 2003, the Detroit Historical Museum will open Techno: Detroit’s Gift to the World. This is a first of its kind exhibit and will feature many DJ’s and producers from Detroit that have made significant contributions to the world of Techno music. We will tell the “inside” story of how these individuals and others created and cultivated a style of music that would have the world dancing. THE WORLD’S FIRST TECHNO EXHIBIT AT THE DETROIT HISTORICAL MUSEUM NEEDS YOUR HELP - GOT AN ITEM ON OUR WISH LIST?

    The Detroit Historical Museum is seeking your help for their ambitious upcoming exhibit, Techno: Detroit’s Gift to the World. The exhibit, opening in January 2003, marks the first time that the story of this electronic dance music has been shared with the public in such a major way. To tell the Techno story, the Museum is looking for a variety of items that showcase this music, which was born in Detroit and became an international phenomenon.

    The items sought by the Museum include the following:

    Early Techno albums (vinyl);

    Promotional posters, fliers and stickers from local, national and international clubs and/or events;

    Recording, sampling and mixing equipment;

    Club fixtures and lighting equipment;

    Photographs of DJs, clubs and festivals.

    If you have any of these items or others pertaining to the history of Techno and its Detroit roots, please contact Catherine Klingman, curator, at (313) 297-8382 or via e-mail at KlingmanC@hist.ci.detroit.mi.us; or Sulaiman Mausi, exhibit developer, at (313) 833-1849 or via e-mail at MausiS@hist.ci.detroit.mi.us.
