the cheapest monitors around are the yamaha msp3's £200.00 although they are very small, and a review in future music said they were ok for programming, but not really ideal for mastering (ive got a pair cause im a cheap bastard :D)

dont listen to me though, ze migl's your man.

Nobody ever mentions the Kroks which are Absolutly blinding for the money - i got mine £260 second hand and they have a blisteringly tight sound - if perhaps a tad bright, but good room placement can overcome this...

I wouldn't say that's neccesarily true, my spirit absolute zeros were £150, and they're as good as any other monitor I've heard... My Girlfriend has got a pair of Acoustic energy monitors and floor standers in our living room which I use for cross referencing...
The Zeros are really good though, good bass response, I got mine after hearing a couple of peoples, really liked the sound of them...

yeah sorry mate i forgot about those, infact i think there about £130/£140 from turnkey (mail order) initially i was looking at getting those, but i was slightly eager, and grabbed the yamaha msp3's for 200 squid.

don't forget that with the 0's u still need amp... if possible go 4 active monitors.. a good amp can make a difference but don't forget active monitors generally have 1 amp 4 each major range of freq. (generally meaning 4 amps 4 2 speakers), also they r especially tweaked 2 compensate as much as possible 4 any lienearity lost by the actual speakers!

Guys u r totally right KRok's Rock errr... . but they might b 2 sensitive 4 djing!?! Any experience u can share on this subject?

All in all, considering u r probably going 2 hammer them a bit with some stompin djing, I would probably go 4 a compromise situation.. 0's with a smart amp like (4 example the) Alesis Ra150..

i have the yorkville bi-active speakers.
they have a nice sub... agressive sound around the 4500 / 5000 Hz.
    and a very clear 5000 / 25000 Hz.... it's all i need.

I had a play in Turnkey with a wide array of speakers. Ended up with Alesis M1 Actives, £270. They're lovely... The results of my meanderings are in the trance forum...

Everything else (active) in the price range was too hard sounding in the upper registers, causing fatigue. I can listen to the Alesis for ages without problems! The rest lasted minutes... :o

Compared to even the more expensive (like, £3000) monitors, they had more bass exposed. This could be due to a subtle lift in the frequency response at this region, but it allows you to get more of an idea of what's going on down there... The upper registers seems a little lower than an ideal flat response, but this isn't really a problem. As long as you know it's there, you can still hear all that detail.

    Samson seems 2 b fine but I'm not quite sure how linear's it's inteded 2 b so can't really comment! :-x

I definatly prefer the 0's over the 2's or even the 4p!!

i've got an old pair of electrovoice sentry 100a's and i love them.
i was using alesis monitor 2's but they are too big and loud for sensible monitoring althought they'll shake the room which is fun.
but personally i would not recommend djing through your studio monitors at all it's just too easy to **** up and trash them and the bass rumble really overworks the drivers if i were you i'd actually look at something from richer sounds for your djing something really cheap for like 50 quid and trash them. it'll save you in the long run believe me.
looking for drivers for old studio monitors is a right old pain in the ass.
if you have a speaker switch or better still an amp with a and b speaker outputs you're laughing.
    love your mum
