Turnkey i hate with a vengence as they never have stock of anything i want for some reason so can I promote a friends music shop in north london here as revenge on them? (no? too late!) www.KMRaudio.com - they are just starting out but promise friendly service and are building a bar downstairs!

Mostly fancy kit and I don't think they are going to do much synth pushing but I'd imagine once they get the builders out they'll be able to do good speaker demos and by the sounds of it serve drinks while you listen :)

Alesis monitors are a little 'soft' sounding compared to others I always thought, but once you get used to them I imagine they work well, I used to know a guy who produced the most fantastic goa trance on an early pair of Alesis speakers ...

What do people think of the Yamaha MSP3s then?

looking for drivers for old studio monitors is a right old pain in the ass.
if you have a speaker switch or better still an amp with a and b speaker outputs you're laughing.

So which to start when you live in an apartment complex and cant rattle as often as you would like while hearing quality sound.

Hmm... This could be worrying. I've changed my studio recently so I can get a good listening position and chuck everything through a patch bay. I now patch my DJ mixer through to my Alesis Active M1s...

I don't see this as a problem - I assume the hard cut-off in the sub region would protect my drivers, and I don't play them loud anyway. I tend to mix in the cans, as I get a better high-end response than any speakers I've used. Certainly better than any club system or monitoring booth this side of Buzz DC.

Exactly how much of a problem do you think this is, Dave? I might just start using my 'big' speakers for mixing, to be on the safe side...

Getting a cheap, tinny pair of speakers is a good idea though, as they can be used for testing out mix-downs.

the prob is studio onitors can b sensitive .. so a Limiter would b a good thing... fast transients can b a prob.. but has u r playing vinyl or comercially released cds.. I would say 80% of this prob is atenuated or even almost solved in the mastering stage...

If u c a way of using hi-fi speakers, go 4 it.. U can easily find loads of active speakers in the range of 60-150 w rms form several brands like JBL, DAS, etc... sure some will have a bit of lacking bass but u can do a crazy thing and plac' em in some corners of yer room and check if that give's ya that club boom...

Just got some Hafler M5s and they are really nice and loads of bass without drowning the mid and top end. Highly recommended.

I have the Alesis M1 Active powered's in the studio. They're great! People complain sometimes about hte low end but its fine. For DJing I would just use a regular pair of speakers unless I was doing a professional mix cd. I think if you get too used to having good speakers at home for DJing you won't adjust so easily to the poor setups in clubs and raves.

im usin alesis m1 mk2 actives too.

i think there great, i think there even greater now my ears are used to mixing down tracks.

for the price id say they were excellent, especially for a first pair of home studio monitors (which is what they were for me)

m audio bx 8's sounded good to me but the m1s sounded better and as a bonus were cheaper

Like someone said, the Yorkville YSM1p is really great, I like them much more than the Alesis monitors.

Genelec 1030 is also some real good stuff.

What do ppl think of the Mackie HR624? They are small but man do they output some serious quality.

Do you guys think a pair of these babies is more than enough to produce material at high quality sound?

These monitors is pretty good, but if you are after good brilliance and a dynamic bottom, buy something else (Mackie should just producer Mixing consoles!).

Go to your local musicstore and bring some records and test out the monitors, the best way is to listen...

Yes i also have these babies. The active ones.
Really a good sound. Especially for producing techno music.

Check the Adam speakers... they r absolutly amazing 4 they're price, we r talking big time quality... so beware of the price!!!
