Default Buying My First Wireless Router/Modem

I'm thinking about going wireless soon as im gonna buy a laptop.

First thing id like to know is what speed would you recommend? The faster the better? or the faster more dropouts?

    54 Mbps
    108 Mbps

The next thing i need to find out what brands are good. Lots of people tell me 'Netgear' are good. Whats your opinion?

    This router sounds quite nice:

    NETGEAR DG834GT

If you are just using the wireless to get on the net, the speed doesnt really matter. Unless you have a full T-1 or something at home, its going to be less than 1Mbps, but if you plan on transferring large files between the wireless laptop and another wired/wireless PC, the faster the better.
    Hope that helps.
