    Default The Contemporary Folk Thread

Anyone of fan of modern folk (or just folk in general) ?

I happen to be listening to an awful lot recently, so much so that i'd say folk was my favourite music right now.

    Currently listening to:

    Adem
    Tunng
    Sufjan Stevens
    Stephen Fretwell
    Willy Mason
    Vincent Gallo

And a whole load of folk influenced shit.

Cool man - good to hear of other techno bods who are into folk as well - its one of my fave genre's at the mo too.

Went to see Suzanne Vega in concert on Monday night (promoting her new album which will be out Autumn next year) - first time been to a folk gig since v. young growing up in Holmfirth (a town famous for its annual folk festival), and proper enjoyed it - really good night, sitting chilling, having a beer and listening to a quality vocalist in a nice intimate little venue - more sedate than many of my pasttimes but made a nice change.

I dont listen to lots and lots of it, but I'm loving this current revival in the sound. I think Bright Eyes is absolutely brilliant, and I've heard plenty of other good stuff on his label as well, Conor Oberst seems to be the main man for folk these days.

I'm also seriously into Bruce Springsteens recent album, We Shall Overcome - The Seeger Sessions. Its all covers of various folk standards, some of them VERY old, done with a big country folk band sort of affair, guitar, strings, brass, accordian, etc. When its rockin its totally rollicking good time music (check Pay Me My Money Down), and you can really feel the emotion in the slower numbers. Highly reccomended...

    Ray LaMontagne - Trouble

****ing amazing album, really west coast usa modern day neil young kinda thing, absolutely love it, totally amazing all the way through

also M Ward - Fuel For Fire, Jim Noir, the new Shack album (maybe not as contemporary, but steeped in folk traditions via the guitar playing, rhythm's etc etc), James Morrison (although a little too commerical at times)

too much to mention actually mind goes a blank when it comes to answering these things !
