    Default The Strokes

i know they have been around for a good few years now, and i have always been familiar with their singles but was only introduced to their first album, 'Is This It', just recently by one of my house-mates...

i was totaly blown away by the record, every track is quality and the two singles which most people will be familair with compliment the album perfectly. their lead vocalist sounds almost uninterested when he sings which somehow works really well, and the melodies incorporated by the guitarists are beautiful...

i got hold of their second album today and plan to listen to it, maybe tomorrow on the way to work, they have also recently released a third album which i will get round to in good time...

anybody else here into The Strokes?

Yeah i like em. The latest record "First Impressions of Earth" is a little hit 'n' miss though.

My fav record of the three is "Room On Fire, although i don't own the debut. (In other words i'm yet to give it a proper listen)

I think they're ace, Is This It totally changed everything as far as rock/indie is concerned, I think maybe people went a bit too far and put them on a bit of a pedestal, but nontheless they are quality. I dont really like Room On Fire so much, when I listen to it I tend to skip tracks, but I thought First Impressions of Earth was a solid album. It does lose steam a bit towards the end, but its far longer than the other two, so maybe they should have stuck with the 45 minute sort of mark. I absolutely love Heart In A Cage and The Other Side.

Oh yeah, just remembered, Razorblade off First Impressions of Earth is a total rip off, the tune is very blatently stolen from of all people - Barry Manilow! I was howling when I heard the Manilow tune they jacked, wish I could remember what its called, I'm sure Google knows...

I got hold of 'Room On Fire' recently and quite enjoyed the album but have to say that it lacked the impact of 'Is This It'...

both albums are really good but for me the first has that little something special...

gonna grab their latest work as soon as poss...

"Is this it" didnt really change that much to be honest, but it certainly opened the flood gates for a whole wave of great new american music. In particular New York bands and artists. Some fantastic bands all came to light since then. It certainly had a great impact over here, but not as much as say homegrown bands like The Libertines. When "Up the Bracket" came out, things went insane. It was like when "Definately Maybe" came out all over again, a true, and much needed, shake up of the british indie scene. Certainly a seminal album, "Is this it" i mean, and one that i play at least once a week still, it is truely a brilliant album and captured a feeling at the time that still conveys amazingly from the very first track. "Room on Fire" is brilliant too, the last album, not so brilliant at all.

They are not as ground breaking as they were hyped up to be.
They had such an I don't give a f*ck attitude to their image that it forced people to take notice.
Typical Nyc Attitude gotta love it.

See, everybody loved the first two albums and thought the third was so-so. I am the exact opposite for some reason. I noticed there was a rip-off in the third album as well. But francisco is right, those tracks mentioned are killers. Which leads me to my next point, ****
