I've just finished my first real techno track (all the rest ended up sounding like trance)

the kick drum makes it sound trance..... your problem (i can see this cause we used to do the same), is that you're seeing it all as a formula. create your own!!!
and seriously, get into kick and sub bass. the rest will follow :=]
