if your financing the label yourself, which is the sensible option if you want full control on your output, then its at the labels discretion how many they want to press

you should breakeven on 500. I'd stick "Limited to 500" on the label and see how it goes... decent artists and correct promotion with a good distributor will sell. You can always repress.
