What with the resurgence of (decent!) guitar music, am I alone in thinking that a lot of it sounds like a re-hash of either punk or post-punk/industrial? The arctic monkeys may as well be the buzzcocks, bloc party are the fall without mr E smith, or the talking heads minus the humour!
I'm not complaining, it is just that -while a good tune is a good tune-nothing really spectacular and ground breaking has appeared in contemporary music-electronica really was something different, but that began to make it's mark in popular consciousness 20 years ago.
Have we reached the post-pop stage? Personally I love 60's psych stuff, but that has been done spacemen 3 and stereolab...I suppose I could cite any genre and point out contemporary rip-off's (or praise mind you) of it...
what is going to be the next big leap in contemporary music?
Just curious about people's opinions (and any tips of course, being an old git!)

i dont think buzzcocks were really that new either...with the garage rock scene before them (sonics/stooges + all the unknowns) and before that the dirty rock & roll like link wray. i think its always been difficult to have a totally new sound, it always seems to be an amalgamation of styles. predicting the next big thing?? hmm that'd be a nice skill to have!
