Where does hardstyle and hard trance go from here?

With all the recent controversy surrounding hardstyle/hard trance and how it's been represented in Mixmag, where do you see it going?

Will the underground dj's leave hardstyle alone immedaitely?
Will hard trance/hardstyle become a dirty word?
Will dj's steer clear of the hard Italian sound and look for more melody?

Your thoughts are appreciated!

personaly...im just gonna get on with it, play what i like 2 play same as always. Hardstyle a dirty word? nah dont reckon so.

Why should we let 1 article in 'that' magazine (hehehe) dictate the way we dj, its not about that afterall. Nothing can take away the fact that the sound which falls under that pigeon is phenomenal.

If DJs are gonna change their style just over this, well then 'that' mag has won if u know wot i mean.

If anything this situ will probably making us gel and communicate a bit more (hopefully)

Play what you like and what you think is good, mix it up, play a bit of everything - don't limit yourselves by genre names.

There'll be new genres in the future that you might like too, doesn't mean that if you're currently a hard trance DJ you should never go near anything else does it.

Look at all the legends in dance music that all used to play fairly similar tunes on the same bill (think - Sy, Sasha, Carl Cox, Grooverider, etc).

Dance music (and music in general) always evolves - nothing wrong with that - it's just natural.

Nothing in the way I play, think and enjoy what I do will change. Everytime something has become commercially acceptable throughout the last 20 years, I've gone the other way. I will not be changing musically unless a style I play becomes blindingly commercial.

Perhaps it's becoming harder than ever to find something that is as underground and 'underground' used to be, but we will find it - even if it may be only a few months before other people find it. we are all having to look harder to become unique. Tough I know, but that's what sets the men apart from the boys.

But somewhere where I differ to alot of people is I actually want to play my underground sound to as many people as possible. I love the bigger events where I can can get my message across to lots of people - just as I love the smaller events. I love writing for the press, cause more people know abut my music. This does not mean I am commercial - I just want everyone to be able to hear good, underground/futuristic music that is not cained by commercial DJ's.

Perhaps it seems to some like I'm contradicting myself? But back in the 80's I was always the kid back at the afterparty playing techno to a bunch of house heads who didn't really want to hear it. I've always been the one who's wanted my tape on in the car, because I really want people to understand my sound. Maybe now, that has the potential to make me look commercial in some respects, but as they say - old habits die hard. If only everyone was into the underground sound/mindset... music would not be in the state it's in...

Stick with what you believe in - that's my way forward....

Iv always stuck to what i believe in. Iv had to, i mainly play across the board harcore techno ie. from slow Nu skool gabber to break neck speedcore. The fact i play that mainly isnt a choice id love to play hard trance/techno out as much and to be honest its happening alot more recently.

So when u say that u were the kid who back at parties played techno to house heads, im the same but in a more hated get him off the dex sense! Even hard trance and techno lovers despise hardcore techno and thats a fact, my good m8 Saki Nzyme(whos on this forum) whinges when im at his and i bang on some new Rebel Scum.hehehehe(tho that is why i play it there.hah!) I know exactly what ur saying also about wanting the other people 2 understand ur/our music. You try ur hardest dontcha but their oblivious to any reason. Tho at the same time i love doing it, its one of the many reasons i love playing what i do.

As for you wanting to play 2 big crowds and getting it across to more ppl, thats not being commercial thats just damn normal. I love it. I played b2b with Dolphin at the North xmas party in the main room 12-1.15 and thats the most ppl iv ever played hardcore techno to (about 600 in the main room) the busiest iv ever seen it and it was the most excilarating feeling ever, both me n greg agreed that it was one of if not the best set we'd played and gregs played out a fair more years than i have. Iv played trance/techno 2 alot more but it wasnt the same 2 me. So i know completely where your coming from as i reckon most on this forum do. We all have the same strong feelings for our scene, we just think that we can benefit them differently at times

Perspective? Perspective is different for different ppl. It actually all depends how much all of this music thing means to you.

I'll talk about certain synth sounds on a track until the cows come - I'll try to get a kick drum sounding right on a track by adjusting a certain frequency for 13 hours. I'll spend a whole night loosing sleep because someone wrote that my arse smells and my music sucks. And then I'll write 6 page essays on message boards about it!!! In my little world, a Mixmag interview matters! I don't care if ppl look at the pics! It just matters...

... I'm just damn passionate about what I do - and so are alot of people on this board. Perspective is a very person thing, so if I want to worry about where hardtrance and hardstyle will go from here please let me man!!!! hahahaha

but yes, you have a point - i reckon the mixmag thing will create a nice little stir within our scene and then affect absolutely none of us down the line - it'll be back to judge jules and godskitchen. thus our arguements and views will have apparently been made for nothing.

i think alot of us after this will know where each of us are coming from and it'll help us shape a really healthy, respectful scene.

hahahaha. ye man, im a total sample hoarder and kick drum manipulator. Its addictive. You end up sitting up all night just making/searching for different noises and not even starting a new track. I so know that half my friends do this also tho which is a relief.

Music for some is a complete obssession and i wudnt have it any other way.

touchy! i don't produce or even mix music but that doesn't mean i'm not passionate about it, music is what makes my world go round and excuse me for not being so completly anal about it that i have to throw the toys out of the pram over a few name-tags (so to speak) that have been given to a music style! have a word!!

The bottom line is this mate you are an entertainer and you care about people you should not change what you do if the wankers try and take our music and commercialise it something else will pop out and bite you it always does you like me and the other people on this board are homed in we are all one and nobody will ever change that seek and you will find my friend.

Let them try and take what is rightfully ours,and see what happens.

at the end of the day our music has leggs... the technology will continue to grow.... the style`s will change.... the labels we put on our sound will to, all we have to do to be innovative is be creative... in the way we play our sound and the way we make our music... personally im not to fussed what mixmag have to say about my music after all its only an opinion and the perspective of all who read that opinion will be different anyway(i havent read this article everyones talking about so dont bite my head off if its really really substantial shit) the thirst for fresh underground music will never be quenched thats why theres so much diversity out there.. i cant see peoples opinions efeecting us to much after all we and many many people love and live for this music!!
