Don't know the UK press that well.

From what I've heard though, it influences the scene over there in a major way.. Seems like MoS, Mixmag has alot of power. (Both still being released?)

Hyping in the past of everything from trance, techno and tribal to hardhouse hasn't been good at all though..

    Take each genre:

Hardhouse shouldn't have gotten a drop worth of attention at all. Luckily it has been destroyed by hype. Same way it destroyed the trance-scene over here.

Techno didn't need the attention either, but of of course in another way. Seeing superstar progressive house DJs starting to drop brilliant techno and make it their own newfound flavour, has annoyed me alot. Seeing skilled people like Umek starting to remix and release on Black hole just isn't right.

Tribal got a huge lift over here and every bandwagon progressive/breaks DJ suddenly loved Samuel L Session and Ben Sims.. Just not ****in right.. This is the soulful funky tech, people have been loving for ages because of quality and underground feel.

The worst story though is the story of trance. Even the term has been abused over since the early 90s. Then processed, violated and raped in the most hideous manner. The sole reason why us trancers get so much shit is because of the promotional intercourse the press had with it. Hype, hype, hype. How can such a class genre, end up being equivalent to the word cheese? Alot more work is needed to restore the image of how good trance can actually be.

Heh, seems like alot of reasons not to bring the media into the loop. However attention could be good. I know for a fact the growth of trance in 1997/1998/1999 brought alot of skilled producer into genre...

Then again, it might make alot of unwanted producers and DJs to brand the style as their own..

I really hate like seeing half the hardhouse community turning
    hardtrancy..

Read an interview with three highly profiled UK hardhousers, they all stated that they spun hardtrance & hardstyle..

To me that's a ****in disgrace.. Been comitting my life to this genre for close to 4 years now. IF ANYTHING WHATSOEVER has contributed to destroy the huge trance community that was here, it's hardhouse. One after another promoter turned Tidy and in the end there was no more trance. Courtesy of the press hyping good things into pieces.

Hard to tell what's the best.

Luckily we have committed and responsible Producers/DJs like yourself Mark, to handle this the right way! Hehe.

    ;)

    old topic (!!!!) BUT

well said mate, well said. that made a very interesting read and much of what you say is very true indeed. i see your point about promoters turning tidy and thereforehard trance goes out of the window. interesting -i'd never thought of this before like that. but now i think many of the clubs are wising up to monotonous hard house and readdressing the balance. i also see your point about hardhouse dj's now saying they play hard trance and hardstyle. tbh, i think music evolves, hard housers are allowed to say they play something else if they want to but i don't believe many of the recent converts can truly say they play hard trance and hardstyle. more like hardstyle and slightly melodic hardstyle if you ask me. plus they don't understand how to journey their sets - which is one of the keys to hard trance i reckon. mind you this may shift but it's up to the ppl who LIVE this music to stuggle to show ppl the way. ;)

There just huge glossy adverts funded by the superclubs. Why pay nearly a fiver for that shite.

Get voted club of the year...my arse!!! If ya have the money to pay for that title.

I think things need a boost. Maybe mags can do it. Maybe not.

    Kiss of death imo.

Does anyone who likes underground music actually buy these mags???

Reviews that are months out of date? Which drugs are in fashion? What music style is in fashion..... blah blah blah

Have the writers have no interest in hard dance music and write about scens they have no concept of.

It's the sheep leading the sheep!

Proberly the most difficult question in clubland.

Its so difficult to find the right balance on this subject that I'm not gonna give my opinion cause I could talk all day about pros and cons for both sides.

The only thing I will mention is that every option and decision would need some serious thought.

If it was up to me I would ask for advice and help to answer this question from someone who has experience of the scene like no other and has been at the fore front since day dot...................

So Mark wot do you think?

I think the music press need a really big rethink on there attitude to dance music. They treat it as a fashion accesory and dump it for the next craze....then they harp on about the end of dance culture.

Was reading and interview with ID+T and they refer to dance music as the next rock and roll with it only just getting started. They actually see it as being that long term.

Why do the dance mags have such as short term view? Discarding musical genres as and when it suits them. Just to sell a few more issues??!!

Dance magazines should be written by people into the muisc not using it as a press pass just to get high.
