Mixin stylez.....

I know most peeps on here have a slightly different mixin style, i deduced that from listening to mixes that everyone has produced over the years.

I was wondering what everyones preferentinal mixing style is. Do you prefer to mix in the next tune from the point in the record where the kickdrum first kicks in.. or maybe the first hi-hat.....depending on the tune

From a personal perspective. I like to mix the tune in from the first bit of the record. I see it as a challenge, especially if the tune kicks off with a string or riff intro without any percussion to que up with. The only problem with that though is you sometimes end up with mixes that go on for 2 or 3 minutes and it can all go Pete Tong when the bass kicks in on the record you are mixin in if you havent maintained beat sync.

It is ofcourse totally different in a club environment...you rarely or never get a setup that can provide you with a montor system that is as clear as you have at home....therefore you have to tailor your mixin style accordingly and often short and sweet is best.

The style you use sounds better when youve got the riff/string coming in from the start but your right is a pain in the arse once the bass kicks in. You can always kill the bass on the outro track with the bass on the intro track but sometimes loses the feel of your mix. Depends really I like to use the hi hat as its pretty similar but the bassline usually has different depth so hard to control. Unless your mixing edms, spaceflowers and united ravers tracks then that is pretty simple ;)

Good question mate, and one i have never really though about tbh!

I dont really think about it while mixing, because i have had these records for so long that its just second nature when it comes out the sleeve.... i know that this record will start from the riff at the beginning and work easily or this one is a cunt to mix so just start from the kick/percussion etc.

If the tune has a long intro, I will spend a few nights practising to see if it will all go in or not, trying from different starting points etc, off beat n shit. But if it doesnt go the, it goes to the "starting at the kick" part of my box.

But regards a club enviroment..... the old riffs go right out the window!!! Give me a kick to start anyday

I would say my mixing varies, dont stick to one style. If im doing a mix what i will be sending out, i will go through loads of planning with the mixes. Making sure they sit nicely and dont sound awkward (nothing clashing), making sure they end nicely when the other tune breaks etc etc

Then there is EQing, some tunes i will mix with the bass out slightly, and then swap the basslines over when it kicks. Same with the mid really.

Agreed with the club enviroment though, you have got to do what suits, and if that means starting from the Kick & Bass it has got to be done!
