can some one point me in the direction of a really good parametric eq.
free if poss, but willing to splash out if theres a gem out there

Check iieq and noname eq on the last page of the "free vst thread". They both are really good. You might also want to check out posihfopit eq, nyquist eq and
reaeq http://reaper.fm/files/reaplugs.zip. that`s from the free world only but should get ya going.
