Alright mate. Been trying to use that free hi q recorder, but all the levels keep going through the roof! It came to the point where i was trying to do a set with hardly any master volume and the gains right down to stop it from clipping. But its a bit of a joke trying to mix with the gains right down (just 3 green lights lit up & very little master volume)

I have gone with the same way as your setup, as the usb i ordered was wrong. So got the same lead as you and plugged in the back of pc (using mic as the input)

Any help for me mate?

U will need to turn down the line in volume.

Go to:
Start
Control Panel
Sounds & Audio Devices
Audio "tab"
Sound Recording Volume

In there is a "line in" section, mine is set just under half way, but just muck about with it until it sounds ok.

Also in the Hi-Q recorders options section, click the "Auto Set" box so that it will automatically set the volume for u.

I find the perfect frequency on sound forge which usually means both the channels are pushed to the top of the mixer...

Then I determine how loud I wish to hear the music by the external volume control of my system...

This same principal works whether I record vinyls... tapes etc.

Don't know what you think of the sound quality of the stuff I uploaded but i think it stands up pretty good. for the record i used an old aiwa 410 cassette deck plugged into a bog standard soundblaster, copied it using FreeRecorder ( downloaded especially) and converted to mp3 with dbPoweramp.......all done in the comfort of my garden shed. Who says old people and technology don't mix?..............ed

Alright ally, i think i am on the right track with this now. Just another question mate. I have done what you told me to do with the Line In Volume. You know when you click autoset and then 'Go' does your volume indicator at the side slide all the way down to the bottom? This is what it is doing with mine.

Levels seem to be ok. My volume is just goin over the green bar tab slightly, but its sounding ok when recorded.
