    whats the best soundcard you can get for a laptop?

    i had the edirol UA25 with mine for ages and it was very good

    why USB and not FW?

    Maybe his laptop doesn't have Fire Wire. If that's the case, you can get PCMIA, or whatever, Fire Wire cards. I've not had any experience with them though.

    i would avoid USB soundcards at all costs

    USB is fine for peripherals and connections, but after having several USB external cards im just not impressed overall, and if possible i would go for Firewire. There's just something about USB soundcards, they dont deliver to the quality i want, or need. PCI based all the way but if on a laptop yeah PCMIA or Firewire
