.....how come so many of the major techno artists / DJs/ producers over the years are black, but yet so few black people like techno.

Even the main original pioneers of techno were black: Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Blake Baxter. If you look at the amount of black artists involved in the scene over the years, there are loads: Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, DJ T-1000, Colin Dale, Steve Rachmad, DJ Rush, Green Velvet, DJ Bone, Stacey Pullen, Claude Young, Robert Hood, Trevor Rockliffe, Carl Cox.

But yet if you go to a techno club or to a record shop selling techno, the vast majority of fanatics are white and you’d be hard pushed to find a black face.

Not that colour of a person’s skin should matter, but I just find it a bit strange, anyone else ever wondered this ?

i've thought about that a lot. why is techno most popular in the whitest of white countries eg: sweden, germany, netherlands, belgium?

i really don't have any answers. lots of japanese kids into techno as well.

Techno has always been black music in my opinion. I think Derrick May said something to the effect when being interviewed on his views about karftwerk that "the Europeans left us waiting, they started something, but they never finished it" Techno is what happens when Black kids grow up on Al Green, and then they get a hold of Visage records!!!

People change and music changes, some people who like techno start to dislike it and move on. Go to a drum&bass or Garage night in London, it is exactly the opposite (spot the white man).

I agree with the last post about Japan. Most of Asia are into techno I spent some time in Thailand a few years ago and they fcuking love it. Sven Vath and Richie Hawtin were very popular as were underworld. It's really weird to watch as none of them touch drugs and they jump around lunatics totally loving the music, the DJ’s must love it. If any of you get the opportunity visit south east Asia, do it, it's happening place if your into your techno…

Thats quite an interesting point you made there. When i lived in Toronto i kind of felt it was like this, depends on the crowd your raised up in. In the projects in Toronto, Rap music is prodominently big.

But my black friends who grew up in a middle class society were usually open minded to all styles of music not just hip hop.

In Brazil its the oposite, here one of the best djs of techno is black. A lot of the up and coming djs in the scene here are black too!!! Im not sure why this is but it might have to do with the population of black vs white vs hispanic.

But anyhow who the Frig cares!!!!!!! Black white purple, green orange, hell if they aliens come and bring me some hard ass techno they are welcome here anytime!!!!!

    Peace

in our national soccer team (Holland) half of the players are black... while only about 15% of the population is black, they are just better in soccer I think.. So maybe black people are just also better in...... nah

I've wondered this a lot myself. Being a person of color myself that plays techno, when I have discussions about dj'ing to other black people, they always ask me why don't I play hip hop. It's a tough market here in the states. I've never been to Detroit though, and I'd imagine a lot more black people there respect and listen to techno...but here in the southern US (Houston, Tx)...finding black people that are avid techno fans is a rarity.

    Because if you like techno
Here the Uber macho culture of the hood will make you appear to be a homo.
    Straight up.
Techno or any kind of dance music has a stigma to it.
    Plain and simple
Techno in certain areas even the suburbs is not considered keeping it real.

please excuse the blanant possible wrongness of this. . . .

but in support of S.O.S's reply -

I think early techno was heavily structured after early house music (tape loops and drum machines) - which was dominated by NYC and Chicagos underground gay circuit.

'Detroit' techno probably leaped off of the foundation the early club music was built on. hence the possible light-in-the-loafers appearance.

than again, what the hell do i know.

    So true.

So many people look up to that man as an icon.

"Yeah, he`s so cool, he got shot like 8 times man"

Personally, that`s not cool to me. If he was a gangster and got shot, he was either
    stupid,
    crap,
too slow (mentally and in terms of peditation)
made a lot of enemies (and was therefore stupid)

A cool gangster never gets shot. Or even gets in the line of fire, he has other people for that. He doesn`t make enemies becuase he is a master manipulator.

Why would anyone want to be him?
He represents nothing but primal behaviour.
    Solitary by nature.
    Isolation is the gift.
Does anyone have courage to stand apart any more?

Funny thing...I know more blacks that can relate to Electro more than techno...a la Juan Atkin's Cybotron. "Clear" was a staple in rap clubs in the late eighties...early ninetys. As a matter of fact, a lot of the DJ's in the rap/r&b clubs used to use "Clear" to test the sound. This I know as fact in Houston.

I think it's about history and culture. Change the history and culture of the races, and think what happens !

In each country this history that you said, is different, why ?!

I'll tell about Brazil, just a example.

The most of people who goes a club to listen techno is white, but it's not about the music, is because the history and culture of the people, the most black people is really poor, it's answer a lot of things(what they like, fell, think, do). But there is some djs leading techno music to poor and black people and they are loving it!

I hope you undestand my point and my english...

Your point is crystal. I just wish the P. Diddys, Jay Z's (label owners) were more interested in actual "techno" instead of "bubblegum dance music" Maybe it would be "commercial" at first, but then you would end up having the new found backpack techno followers trying to stay underground quoting 909 cyphers. Hahaha.

On another note...this struck me as hillarious:

P Diddy Booed Off Stage Twice In Ibiza
P Diddy was reportedly booed off stage two nights running by clubbers in Ibiza.
Both times he arrived to cheers but fell out of favour when he tried to rap, according to reports.
P Diddy's first appearance was at Space which a newspaper quotes a source as saying "started well".
"He was getting the crowd going and singing over some tracks. But when he tried to rap the crowd turned on him, shouting and jeering until he left the stage."
And a visit to underground club DC10 for after-hours party Coco Loco the following day was equally disastrous.
The insider continued: "He got on stage and everyone cheered - but once he started rapping there was another chorus of boos. He persevered but the crowd reaction was so bad he was forced to leave the stage.
"He looked very hurt and was heard asking one of his flunkies: "Why don't they dig me?""

    Hahaha!
