amplitube is a great plug in for 303's make's the midrange very fat with out loosing the top end squeel.

i allso use an analong saturation plugin which gives a real gritty sound.

the distortion on the audiobassline needs to be seriuosly reworked

i find (on the hardware side) my tb303 sounds wicked through
the boss se70 multi effects...im sure Henry mentions it in his kit list.
on the software/vst side i use the internal distorsion on the audiorealism bassline, with careful use of eq/chorus/delay/reverb you can get a lovely sound :)
Do what thou will...if you know what i mean?

    I want a proper 303...give me yours... :P

I find audiorealism's bassline to sound horrible when using the built in distortion, you can hear the digital aliasing toooo much i think, Tyhat said, when used withoug the distortion, it sounds wicked for squechy / liquis'y acid lines, but it needs some beef from some EQ, prefably hardware!

Paul - does youe freebass seem to "loose it" the cut off at about 3 '0' clock on the cut-of knob???

the suf sound was a 303 straight into a channel of a mackie 24/8/2 with the gain turned up full and the mids and highs up , then just keep the fader low
and you'll need a noise gate.
you can get almost the same sound from smaller mackie desks too
very smooth , especially with a bit of chorus on it too.
    great for melodic lead lines
    inFECKINcredible advice.

also, another great thing is to put shitty batteries in ya TB :)

    well now you're pushing it!
that's enough trade secrets for the time being

    no not really
the smitten sound was same as the suf thing really
but it was more geezer on smitten than me or at least geezers studio
io even did one of my tracks in his studio for smitten.
so it was his 303 and they all sound different from each other.
some are thinner sounding some are phatter some have more resonance etc etc
so you get a really unique sound every time.

same with the 909s , the kick and snare especially, they vary a lot
and seeing as they are the most regularly used bits of the 909
you get a very recognizable sound in all your tracks very quickly.

which is partly why all that old acid techno does sound the way it does
we only had 909s and samplers not much else for drums ,so we concentrated on the synths for the tune and the odd drumloop to chug things along.
so each persons record had a real definite sound, according to the studio used.
as i'm sure you can hear for yourself.

but anyway one thing i have to say about the 303
the real thing still beats the crap oout of anything else
software , and hardware , only the roland TB 303 really has THAT sound.

all hail le petite prince !

i find it amazing that 303's sound different to each other. i mean you can tell that smittens were made on the same 303 because they all sound like they are going on holiday together.

BTW, has anyone played with the Roland Varios? Its supposed to be the next best thing to a 303. I couldnt get it to squeal at all. Huge disappointment.

I can't say i've ever heard your tracks and thought that's a real 303 in there.

Most emulators sound great until you start tweaking the resonance.
