Question how to get a nice cruchy percussion?

Hi people, am trying to get a nice crunchy percussion as heard on the likes of alot of hard techno/schranz tunes. In particular like on the Video Killed The DJ's Bootleg. I have tried using bongo's and then distorting, overcompressing and then using a filter which does get a nice crunchy sound but has too much of a bouncy feel, tried alterng eq to get rid of the sound I no longer want but then the percussion totally looses it's depth and punchyness. Any tips? Am using Logic Pro 8

    Bitcrush mate...bitcrush all the way.

Good example for video killed the djs esque percussion would be to check a tune called Evanti - What A Rush
Everybody is in the place....! letz go...

this isn't the sound you're looking for but another cruncheriser is to time stretch a percussion loop a few times then stretch it back to its original length ;)

and bit depth + sampling frequency has been already mentioned...
