Default Bleep 103: Dj Loz

Bleep 103
Aired: March 20th, 2008
Mixed by: Dj Loz (UK) / No Data Available

Dj 'Superstar' Loz makes his return to the Bleep radio stage. This time around he tried out a little twist on the usual. Slowed down Wonk no double-timed half speed. Err...or something. It's about 3/4 of the tempo you're probably used to, but since it still catches my ear and you're all to be subjected to my every whim (ho ho!), it's being sent your way.

Bleep's goal is to bring quality dance-floor music, music without it's head up it's arse, to areas where it's seemingly lacking. Stale music has taken over and needs to move over. Variety is one component of Bleep, but only one of many. Look forward to hearing many forms of Electronic music with labeling of the sub-genres firmly ignored. We need less labels, not more. Techno is the label that Bleep assumes, but it's the Techno label of days gone by...with a sense of humour.

Default Bleep 104: BeNi

Bleep 104
Aired: March 27th, 2008
Mixed by: BeNi (DE) / Myspace

BeNi and I spoke about a Bleep show....a LONG friggin time ago. So I was quite pleased when he --out of no where-- popped back into the picture to declare he had a special treat for Bleep, myself and thusly all of you.

This is his first 'studio mix' in 2+ years. it clocks in at just about 2 hours and contains a VERY healthy assortment of new-school, old-school, nu-school and whatever else fits. This is a Techno mix in virtually every sense I would call it one (ok maybe it's missing a bit of house to round the corners).

Cheers go out to BeNi for sure on this one.

BeNi on discogs, myspace

Look for BeNi's releases, remixes and future works on Zinch, Antikonsum, Null, Tonewrecker and Bombtrap. All of which are right respectable labels of which I buy on sight.

Default Bleep 105: The Black E

Bleep 105
Aired: April 3rd, 2008
Mixed by: The Black E (Cristian Vogel & Ben Pest)

Cristian Vogel and Ben pest make up The Black E. They have one Ep that has been released [ Found on the Foundry Floor ] and more to come I hope.

This set isn't the highest quality or clarity. It was recorded via microphone. So you can imagine it has some muffle to it. However, if Cris was willing to share it I wasn't about to say no. You can see the logic of my ways right? Anyway, enjoy it for what it is --one of the best sets of Bloc?-- or don't. It's your call. When I'm listening to it I try to think of it as a really old mixtape that is on it's last legs...Adds a nostalgia factor into the mix which I found suited the odschool 'ish' these two create on the fly as they're playing.

"...when the Black E play, we just jam that shit on the boxes - its all improvised on stage - there's something that resembles a track off the EP, and also a new track called Chimi Churri - its all played on 2 Korg ESX1 ' s , a Casio RZ1 and a Yamaha DX200 - the guest vocal in the middle is my wife, Onne G"

So there you have it. The formula for world domination.

Default Bleep 106: Jerome Hill

Bleep 106
Aired: April 10th, 2008
Mixed by: Jerome Hill (UK) / Don't Recordings

First of all I want to apologize for the rather lackluster tracklist. It's all Jerome had time to do. I was going to go through and add more info, but then time became a factor.

That said...Jerome has served us up a treat. Lots of stuff that has been filed away to the Wonky drawer for the last decade and beyond. Bringing out the stuff that's influenced needs to be done and needs to be done more often by more people. One of the reasons I always enjoy Jerome's sets is that he plays a broad range stylistically and also historically. These are two aspects are more important than almost anything else.

Being broad stylistically not only furthers the craft, but also shows connections and leads to discoveries. being broad historically leads a greater appreciation of the music now being enjoyed and leads to better music in the future. A sense of where it's been and what's been done is what Jerome does. And he does it well.

Jerome runs Don't Recordings. A label fully dedicated to swerving the community. Also one of my favorite labels. Check it.
Enjoy!

A meandering walkabout is what today's Bleep is. I started off with a white which I'm certain --but can't prove-- is an old Svek record and then worked my way into some of the newer wonk massive that is about to drop. The new Don't made the grade of course. As well as the next Coin Op by the man with the plan 3d!t. I then detoured through some Michigan suburbs before hitting up Sweden and then rounding it all off with something Chip Tronic floated me a few weeks ago as a taste test/heads up.

Bass, jack, bleeps and dirt. Lots of stuff sneaked into this mix from before I really discovered the full force that is the wonk. I think you'll see that the Chicago jack and Detroit bleep were merely foreshadowing where I would eventually end up. All you have to do is add a bit of humour and distortion and you're 7/10 of the way there. Why only 7/10 you ask? Because good tunes are always more than just the sum of their parts, list of influences or web of creation.

I've realized just recently that there are a solid handful or two (or three) worth of records I've kinda glossed past after getting them. When 20 records or more arrive at the same time some stuff invariably gets less attention than the rest. So for the next few shows I'm going to try and work my way backwards through the last few months and see what I've gone and skimmed past. Not exclusively mind you, but enough to catch up on missed gems.

Also, for those of you who are interested in the Dance Mania Mini Mega Mix Project you need to get your mix in soon. The due date is May 31st, 2008. I couldn't let it drag on forever!

Contrary to my goal of playing some more older stuff I ended up throwing together fairly recent records again. I've never been that good at planning these things out so maybe I should just stick with how I've always done it... loose and off the cuff.

Remember the Dance Mania mixes should be in by May 31st, 2008.

And as far as Bleep news goes Leon Segka is putting together a mix. Leon is from Greece and is the founder of Ntrop Recordings. He approached me about it and I only had to hear an older promo mix of his once to know he'd fit right in. It's looking like it'll be a great blend of jackin' minimal, chunky tech house, bleeps, stabs and twisted vox from him. So keep an eye out for that show!

There's a lot of dirt in this week's Bleep. It starts with possibly my favorite Landstrumm track and works through Jason Leach, TSR, BeNi, Paul Birken and Steady-P only to be interspersed with only a few breaks of ...well Break beats. There area couple bass-line clashes at one point that probably only a fraction of you will notice, but I'll apologize for those anyway. Such is the odd occasion when things are done in one take.

Another Thursday, another Bleep.

This is the last of the batch of pre-recorded sets I've been working through. As of next week any shows done by myself will be on a new mixer. One without so much noise. I'm glad and you should be too.

This week's Bleep has some stuff in it I hadn't touched in ages. Soon to be more stuff dug out of hiding soon too. A 'music room' re-tolling was done last week and while moving the records off of the old shelves and back onto the new ones I re-discovered a healthy amount of stuff that had been lost and forgotten.

Default Bleep 113: Trevor Wilkes

Bleep 113 / Clearly Smudged 5
Aired: May 29th, 2008
Mixed by: Trevor Wilkes (CA) / Fun in the Murky / Bleep Radio

Bleep 113 is a dually. Not only is it a Bleep show, but it's also another entry in the 'Clearly Smudged' mix series.

CS 1, CS 2, Bleep 52 / CS 3, Bleep 76/ CS 4

The Clearly Smudged mixes are not really planned out. I think only one of them has been actually planned in advance so far. Clearly Smudged is just the category I stick a mix in once I realize it's chock full of Chunky Tech and Bleepy Funk. They're on the 'fun and bouncy' side of things as opposed to the bam, bash and tweak.

Default Bleep 114

Bleep 114 / Dance Mania Mini Mega Mix
Aired: June 12th, 2008
Mixed by: ana+one, Clint House, Dj KNC, Eric Lork, Mike Holmes, Norman, Stak & Trevor Wilkes

This was open to all for about 6+ months and I figured it would have gotten much more attention than it did, but don't think I'm complaining. We still have over 100 minutes of DM to enjoy from 8 different people. As things go, I guess it worked out alright. People don't always have the time and all that jazz. Maybe, just maybe, I also over-estimated how many people really know about this label now. Is it unknown amongst the people starting off? I hope not.

Because of a new position at work my schedule will be in flux quite a bit for an unknown period of time. I will no longer be steady days and as such Bleep may not air via Live-Sets at 7pm EST, Thursday nights, as it usually does. Today is the first example of this. Instead of canceling the show for a while I'll just wing it as best as I can and when my schedule falls into something predictable I'll make the schedule request with the Live Sets crew. For those of you who simply grab the archive each week this probably will not affect you. I'll try to keep the show on Thursday for continuity reasons, but it may change.

I tried to make sure and grab each track in this mix from a section of shelf that I haven't picked through in a while. For the first time it actually worked. I always end up cherry picking some of the stuff I play more often, but that didn't happen this time. So aside from the newest 3d!t EP every record is something that's been hiding for a year or two on me. There is definitely some killer stuff I wish I could play more often. Curse only being able to play 20-30 at a time!

Default Bleep 117: Andrez Bergen

Andrez Bergen, better known as Little Nobody, is an expatriate Australian journalist, some-time musician, photographer, DJ, occasional illustrative pencil-pusher, one-time filmmaker, writer, wayward graphic designer, and an ad hoc beer connoisseur, formerly from Melbourne, who's been entrenched in Tokyo, Japan, for almost 7 years now. In most respects %28aural and visual%29, Andrez likes to steal furtive glances in a pseudo-metaphysical rear-vision mirror, greedily brushing up on the "found art" chapter of the Dadaists' handbook; he then plagiarizes heavily from the cut-up techniques of Brion Gysin and Tristan Tzara, nicks the deconstructive tendencies of post-modernism in jaded new ways, and casts a sardonic eye on the industrial music splice 'n' dice ideology of Cabaret Voltaire in the '70s - all the time stimulated by Marcel Duchamp's display of a toilet urinal back in 1917.

on.. Myspace, Discogs

Andrez has only recently cropped up on my radar. His wide spread tastes and exceedingly friendly nature made it an easy call with regards to asking him to do a Bleep show. [00:05] 3d!t "Bleep Radio Intro"

This weeks' show was slightly rushed. In getting it together and in actually airing the show. FitM had some technical difficulties this week which slowed me down at times and stopped me dead in my tracks at others. I hope the tracklist doesn't upset too many of you, I know it's not as detailed as I usually have time for.

Default Bleep 119: Dj Loz

Bleep 119
Aired: July 17th, 2008
Mixed by: Dj Loz (UK) / No Data Available

Bleep 119 is a good'un. Dj Loz has concocted what he believes to be his best mix to date. Now I haven't heard every one he's ever done, but I do know that it's a great mix. Variety of timbre, age of release and style plus Loz' great taste for things which age very well (ie. Classics new and old) makes it one of those shows I think we're lucky to have.
