    Default Bleep 214: Ben Pest

    Bleep Radio #214
    Aired: May 26th, 2010
Mixed by: Ben Pest (UK) / Ben Pest on Myspace

There is only one Ben Pest making music. That is unfortunate. His stuff is gold. He's had several EPs out on the labels we know and love and after years of work the second Panic Bridge is now out as well. More on that tomorrow though.

Ben has his own style. That's something which catches you off guard when it comes to music these days. At first glance it may seem all lumped in with the rest, but that feeling never lasts with his stuff. It is different on a level I'm not even comfortable discussing. So I leave it to you all to check out --if you haven't already in some way--- by listening to this 3 hour live set of his. It pretty much covers all of his material and is most excellent.

Bleep's goal is to bring quality dance-floor music, music without it's head up it's arse, to areas where it's seemingly lacking. Stale music has taken over and needs to move over. We need less labels, not more. Techno may be the label that Bleep assumes, but it's the Techno label of days gone by, one that encompasses much and has a sense of humour. The humour bit may be just me though. Enjoy.

Dj Conehead has a series of themed mixes he began a while back. The series focuses on old-school, Hardcore Breakbeat. Which, as you have already realized, is a very worthy topic. To celebrate his old-school, Hardcore Breakbeat series he's passed on the next two mixes to use as Bleep Radio shows. Today's Bleep is the fifth in the series and next week's Bleep will be the sixth. I hope you like your 90's era Bad-boy Breaks.

Last week was Dj Conehead's first appearance on Bleep Radio. He made that appearance by allowing me to air his Breakbeat Hardcore (Part 5) mix. Now that was fine, great and/or dandy, but what is one to do the week after to follow up? I'm pretty sure the only reasonable follow-up is another one of Dj Conehead's Breakbeat Hardcore mixes. So to finish off his Bleep Radio debut, we have Breakbeat Hardcore Part 6 today!

This is the Vault Mix: right here.

Now you may think to yourself that that is an odd way to start off this week's Bleep Radio intro. Really its not. Its an introduction to the background for this week's Bleep Radio, which makes perfect sense. In September of 2007 I was home from work. Sick, tired and irritated. I knew I had to put together a mix for Anton Banks and thought I'd give it a shot. As it turns out, I ended up recording, in one take, a mix that still gets listened to more than any other mix of my own. I have copies in the house, car and at work. Apparently, as Anton tells it, the mix still even drives traffic to his web-site.

That means its time for a 2nd mix. I don't think I can top it, equal it or even come close off the cuff again though. So I've decided to do a few trial runs. I packed a bag of records that I believe are worthy. Now for the next 2-3 weeks I'll be doing some mix testing. Today's Bleep was mix test #1. Some of the mixes will make it to final Vault Mix, some wont. Some records will be completely cut and some others will be added. We'll see. Feel free to contribute, criticism is great and it probably wont be as harsh as I've already been on myself concerning this mix.

As mentioned last week I'm posting up trial runs of various mixes for a Vault Radio show. Something I don't typically do and am very slow at (considering the 1 hour a week I get to play has to be for Bleep...). Because there is some repetition between the shows right now due to some mixes being liked, I think for next week I'll switch over to the bag of old-school breaks and acid for a brief change. That will be fun as well and I'm looking forward to it now, but after that it'll be a 3rd and hopefully final Vault trial run...

Mike Holmes has been a steady contributor to Bleep Radio for a few years now. He's a stand-up fellow who seems to enjoy good music. As I've outright mentioned in the recent past though, he's about to start contributing to the Fun in the Murky half of the operations as well. Not by writing massive interviews like Andrez does, but by releasing some music! Considering the low output of tunes lately (across the board) I'm always stoked with the idea of new stuff coming out. The only problem I can think of is it's digital nature.

    Bleep Radio #222
    Aired: July 21st, 2010
Mixed by: Malcolm Strachan & Trevor Wilkes

Fun in the Murky / Trevor Wilkes: Last.FM - Stream similar artists

This week's Bleep has me feeling a little self-conscious about things. It's not a mix for starters, its as close to a radio format as I've ever come.

Malcolm Strachan of Toronto came into Hamilton for a day trip last week and we hung out at my place, listening to records and eating food. We plopped a microphone down on the floor and recorded some brief thoughts about ten of the records that Malcolm picked from my shelves. No planning to speak of. Off the cuff thoughts on 10 older records and 2 newer records.

In hind sight we probably should have closed the two large windows immediately beside us as there is a lot of summer time insect noise going on in the background, but we'll call it experiment #1's learnings.

As uncomfortable as I am with this week's show, I think I would like to try again sometime. If anyone in the area feels they're up for it, then just let me know! With practice I'm sure I can streamline the process and get sharper with the edits.

Enjoy.

A small amount of technical difficulty with this week's show. My ISP isn't always the most reliable (or loved) and I had some connection issues getting it uploaded yesterday. One day late won't kill us, it's still an hour of broken beats and maniac stabs. Enjoy!

Bleep Bleep, I was able to steal away for an hour this week by propping the kid up in a wobbly chair and making faces at her in between mixes. I had to keep it light and bouncy for her and got some hands in the air for the last two tracks.

I believe this is the third pre-vault mix. That's enough. I'm happy with it. I'll record it one more time with possibly 1 track switched out and then send 'er off. I think this was a record setting number of trial runs for me. Considering every Bleep is a first run mix. There's no time for do-overs here!

As usual, let me know what you think.

I think you'll find that this week's Bleep, without any planning, has turned into a bit of a way-back machine journey. Well, mid to late 90's anyway. My personal favourite era for these things.

Of course it fell apart for the last two tracks. I really need to either do a whole show using those old 45's or at least keep them out of sight so I'm not tempted to throw them around in inappropriate ways.

Bleep 228 doesn't have any theme to speak of. Nothing intentional anyway. It was merely a case, once again, of grabbing records close at hand. Although I did a bit of flipping to see if I could at least grab things that hadn't been played in a while. The result...? Something that works pretty well for simply being a see where we end up. A bit of new, a bit of old and several "genres" touched upon. Things every set should have really.

I noticed that I haven't really done too many shows lately with me just sort of wandering aimlessly through the vinyl and making random connections. Too many themed mixes and not enough see what what will happen moments. This is the first assault on that beach-head. It'll gradually become more varied over the next few Bleeps. Sometimes it works out pretty well. We'll see!

Homing in on what I planned for. A mix-up, mash-up of this and that. Or as close to it as I seem capable these days. I'll have to content myself with shows of this nature and/or caliber. That's not to say it's bad. Because it's not. I actually enjoy this mix. It's got upwards of 15 years of spread release date wise and sits across several genre borders and schools of thought; quite coherently I think.

I had a show of my own all lined up, up-loaded and ready to go, but then Heiner AKA Psychomantix got in touch. No question about it, once I saw the track-list I knew this live recording needed to be Bleeped out.

    Bleep Info:
Next Weeks Show: Unknown at this time.

Enjoy.

Anyone is highly encouraged to ask questions or comment about Bleep mixes. All questions will be answered. Help will be given. Direction will be shown.
