Easy. In Buddist philosophy the word satori is used to describe a temporary state of enlightenment. Its when you see into your true nature.

When listening to music you are experiencing a constantly evolving & changing present in the form of sound. Your thinking stops (the root of all your problems & worries), all concepts of future & past are destroyed (temporarily). Thats why we love music.

It might make you think of stuff after you have listened to it. But the act of
enjoying music shouldnt involve much thinking.

heh nice :) reminds me of the non-thinking state you get when totally absorbed playing a musical instrument. bit like musical mushin
    .

how do you think music started though, do you think we started playing and realised we reached certain states of mind, or was it more communication based? if this is true, then our view/need of music has changed massively over the years

i am reading a brilliant neuroscience book at the mo about the reasons why are brains love music. i will have to post the name of it up here as soon as i get home. i've only read like 30 pages at the moment but it's one of the most interesting things i think i've ever read... the guy who wrote it is also a musician too, so it's totally on a level that's easy to understand if you produce/play music...
