Who the **** is DJ Icey? I thought Escape was written by Kaycee? But yes, your right, its obviously not techno as you know it. Thing is, to people not really into specific genre's, techno is just a word thats thrown around to describe anything that sounds dancey lol. Sad but true.

Ah so here's the perfect opportunity for me to ask whats the big deal with this track?
Its always one that gets played and hats get tipped in its direction. I even went out and bought the album cd when it came out.
I just dont seem to be able to get it. Yes its quite a *nice* tune. Very musical an' all that, but still... One of the greatest?

I know exactly what you mean.

I'm really hesitant telling people im into techno, because their idea of techno is usually NOTHING like mine...

then i usually get an unstoppable urge to explain the sort of techno i'm talking about...

YES YES YES.. i do that & ppl jus look at me.. trying to explain the duality of heavy techno & stripped melodic.. the emphasis on the beats & rhythms & the comparisons i draw between techno & dub..

    'what.. like Basshunter ?'

    erm.. no.

    erm.. no.

Same here, precisely. Half of them think that techno is 2-Unlimited.

DJ Icey is a perfectly decent Florida Breaks producer.

Thousand Miles is an awesome track.

If you say so. Over here he is looked at as kind of cheesy. He plays a lot of shows with cheeseball trance acts and is kind of lumped in with them. His earlier tracks were pretty good, but I can't be bothered with anything he has put out in the last 10 years.

I think there are a few levels of knowledge after the American "Techno" for anything electronic....

    > People you tell you like Techno that instantly reply "Techno, techno theres no limits"

    > People that think they used to hear Techno at the back of one of the arenas (forget which one now its so long ago) at Helter Skeltor in Milton Keynes. And fair play at least they were out not being spoon fed their music.

    > And then the people who actually know what Techno is of course.

I used to be level two, when I liked my Hardcore and DnB in the 90's. Wasnt until I went to college and met a couple of Swiss guys that I actually heard real Techno.

On topic:- My quintessential Techno tune is Arno Riva and Dj Speep - Kbab (Oxia mix). Not because its a classic that defines a era, movement or Dj in the scene but because when I was weaning myself off DnB I really got along with the rolling Bassline and layered drums. When I first got into Techno I always thought to myself "Techno is the 4/4 equivalent of Drum and Bass" until then I had always believed 4Beat to be cheesy...........

    Yep I was VERY wrong!

p.s. No YouTube vid im afraid, guess I could make one.

Yeah, the UK seems to be the only country that calls gabber or hardcore techno, just "techno". I think this partly came about because in the early days of Skelter's Technodrome you did get dj's like Dave Angel, Colin Favor, Craig Walsh etc playing alongside Producer, Scorpio, Clarkee and so on. As tastes changed the Technodrome name stuck but populated almost entirely with gabber dj's. Same thing with Dreamscape and Dance Planet, they had what they referred to as techno rooms with techno and gabber dj's but that slowly changed to just being gabber dj's.

It's something that seems to persist even now and it's usually a big effort trying to explain to people that techno isn't just 200bpm.
