Either SACD or DVD-Audio depending on which company you ask ;)

SACD is around today, but there's not been a huge takeup, DV-Audio is still up in there as far as I know. Seeing as CDs are good enough for most people I'm not sure there'll be a huge uptake, especially with the advent of electronic music distribution.
Vote techno party!
I know companies have been trying 2 pass the DVD has the new format for audio/ video.. so that would b 96 Khz 24bits 6.1...

sacd or dvd audio
dvd audio would be a good move
Sequence is coming. It's going throughout your imagination. It takes you where you've been before. A higher state of mind. Yeah, you remember the early times. Now were trying to take you again. In the deepest seas of your consciousness.....Time never stops
though i heard dvd would be more costly then its worth because it holds way much more then ever needed - a band or whatever can do a nice 60-80 min cd..a dvd can hold like 10 times that i think..if not more -

As soon as I find a good club with DVD decks I'm buying the rest of the speakers I need and going 5.1 ... till then it's 2 tracks all the way.
Pioneer as one based on they're flagship CDJ 1000, it's called DVJ-X1

For djing though.. I don’t see the crossover to mixing in 5.1 anytime soon. It does not work in the club environment... only in the theater environment.
2 problems..
-Speakers across the room pointed back towards the dj will result in a sound delay. It’s totally against the wall of sound standard layout and a nightmare to mix.
-Surround sound is meant for a center audience. In a club people are everywhere, and 'joe blow' over by the far left speaker will only hear a percussion wizz with the lead synth coming from way across the room. (for example)
Stereo sound is meant for a center listener too ... just like any other mix you could run your main mix in all 5.1 speakers and then fly effects, build ups and fills around the room ... not sure the best way of handling the delay problem ... use a small club I guess :)
should b very cool 4 transe and psychadelic transe... for some acoustic/ ambient/ experimental/ industrial... errr... techno stuff...!?
