Default SFS #09: 2 New live sets for a new year!

2 live recordings for a new year - one recorded in the studio, and one recorded Live @ Rote Fabrik in Zurich 11.12.09 - The quality was pretty bad on the Zurich recording, I cleaned it up as best I could but there is still a lot of noise there - These sets are pretty raw, as I’m still becoming accustomed to the Hardware/Ableton configuration - I do like the roughness of some of the live jamming, just some of the transitions seem a little too rough, I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing - I’ll leave that to you to decide..

Subhead was a big big influence on my early work - Ctrl Alt Delete definitely has a bit of Subheads 11 and 18 in there. I first discovered them in 1996, and straight away they sounded original and unique, like the real embodiment the much touted techno ethic of sounding like "nothing you ever heard before" whilst enduring a real punk rock aesthetic. They were the first producers that I ever met who's attitude, instead of holding back all but what they considered the very best of their material, was "put it all out - even if you don't like it, someone else will!" - Not that you could really tell that by listening to their stuff. Often the reason why you might at first think a track is a dud was because you just didn't get it!

On their sound all I'm going to say here, is "Very broad": I have a mix of 37 trax here to show you how broad that sound really is, so the written word is no competition to that..

Default Signals from Southwark #11: Mark Hawkins Illegal music mix

This week we're going a bit harder than usual - a mix inspired by the kind of stuff I was playing in the mid to late 90s at outdoor parties, so it's a bit of a nostalgia trip... There area few newer pieces in there also, such as the Electric Kettle track, and I'm also warming you up for Scott Robinson's forthcoming live showcase, in preparation for our gig at the WMF in Berlin on 22nd of February, with two trax from his Debut release on Cluster which really hailed the arrival of the third wave of UK techno..

I think Scott would be very chuffed to hear that - Stands out from the other Cluster releases - was definitely pioneering in many ways...

I never heard anything of him before or after that release but it opened my eyes to that whole new mechanical sound at the time, sounded so fresh.

On holiday for 2 weeks so signals is taking a break for a few weeks - will be back early february - anyway, to keep you going, here's a couple of bits from the archives, keep checking http://www.crime-productions.com for further postings, in the meantime, enjoy some ugly history:

2 live sets from one of the original Uglyfunk Parties back in 1999, from Scott Robinson and Je:5 - Definitely groundbreaking and inspirational, hearing these at the time pushed me forward towards my own music making and live performances which were still a few years away from this time. Still sounding fresh as ever, check them out!

Scott Robinson and Je:5 Livesets from Uglyfunk @ The Marcus Garvey, Nottingham, UK, 05.03.99

also new: a dj set from legendary US techno artists D-Knox:

Default Signals From Southwark 15- JE:5

Cutting his teeth on the midlands free party scene, particularly with renegade sound warriors BWPT, JE:5 is another piece in the puzzle of the so-called wonky/brighton/no skool scene which became prevalent in the Uk in the mid '90s. Watching him write whole live sets on the eve of a club event, whilst the sound crew were setting up was inspiring to say the least, and in the studio, his talents have often gone unsung. On vinyl, JE:5 has previously contributed a track to an e.p. for Deluxe Curl records, a remix of Michael Forshaw's "Dumb", and more recently has formed one half of a collaboration with myself, as seen on Relax 2009 "Absurdly Connected Machines".

This week on Signals From Southwark, JE:5 takes us back to the old times with this great selection of classic trax, bringing back many memories of fields in the countryside or big dirty warehouses.

Apologies for the late arrival of this weeks Signals- had some big problems with my internet connection at home and also preparing to move servers, so had more to do than time to do it in.

Here is a recording of the preparations for the gig in Kassel- I'll warn you now, this is raw as hell and very much on the experimental side. Spandex sent me some self sequencing perpetual techno machines for the G1 nord modular, some of which I butchered, and was also inspired by to create some of my own. The experience has definitely made me think more about sequencing using random elements, and break away from more traditional sequencing methods. I'm still waiting to get the recordings back from the Kassel party, which I think will sound better as I had the crowd to vibe off of, and also I used 2 MPCs as appose to just the one here, a few more drums to fill up the gaps and give it some more punch. So, as I say, don't expect this set to be seamless or slick - it's a raw jam, but I do believe there are some good moments in there.. So download and enjoy. Oh, an props to Spandex for getting the ball rolling somewhat..

As a celebration of the Roland TB-303- the silver machine which makes that quacking, squeaky, sometimes liquified, sometimes just goddamned bassy sound, and also to celebrate our move from crime-productions.com over to the new domain and server signalsfromsouthwark.com , here we have 39 shades of Acid House/Techno history.
