Signals From Southwark #18: MANASYt Live
Signals from Southwark # 19: Mark Hawkins Live @ E-lectribe, Kassel, Germany, 22.03.10
Recorded live at E-lectribe, in Kassel, Germany. One of my best gigs in ages, great organisation, great location, great soundsystem, great music and great people! Went and hung out at the Local House/Techno radio station "Minimal City Radio Kassel", whilst Louis Osbourne rocked it out on the decks playing tracky house classics. Did a small interview in German with Michael, the radio host, which was a lot of fun and drank a few beers & some sickly kind of cherry schnapps with some of the other people hanging out there. It was the perfect pre-club hang out! The radio station was situated in the same building that used to house the legendary Stammheim/Aufschwung Ost club, where I played on New Years Eve 2001/2002. Michael had a crack at taking me up there to bring back some old memories of debauchery, but the guy on the door there was having none of it! We also made a funny jingle for the radio in German, which took me about ten takes to get my pronunciation right - the Schnapps really wern't helping there! You can check out the radio-station here: Minimal City Radio Kassel jeden Samstag auf 105.8 on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads
On arrival at the club, it was full of people, and we were greeted by Phillip, one of the organisers. One thing I really liked was that there were a few people involved in the night who were really friendly, so there was always someone to hang out with making me feel completely at home. Also, the decorations were designed by the same guy who did the decoration at Stammheim, it had a similar style to the old Planet nights in Leicester. The music had started out quite housey, but was making a transition into techno which was really refreshing to hear also. It was almost like a trip back into the mid-nineties, a really great inspiring experience which will live on in my memory as one of the good ones!
Anyway, on to the point, the music- Norman (Norman on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads) made an awesome recording, taking in not only the set itself in good quality, but the crowd reaction, capturing perfectly the atmosphere of the evening - He also played on the night, and I hope to feature his set soon on SFS - we'll see.
This current live set is a variation on the last one I posted here, but bolstered by the addition of an MPC2000 to do the old school drums. Again, it is raw and random, utilising some of Spandex's Nord modular perpetual techno machines which I mangled myself to change the sounds, and some self sequencing patches of my own, joined by some old pieces from previous live sets.
Big thanks to everyone involved, especially Norman for this great recording!

Signals From Southwark # 20: Si Begg/Noodles Megamix
Si Begg has had a heavy influence on the electronic scene for well over a decade now. A sampling and sound design pioneer, Begg's contributions started with his collaborations with Cristian Vogel, firstly as part of the Cassette tape based "Cabbage Head Collective" and then as "Inevitech", after which he went on to make genre-fusing productions under a multitude of monikers. He founded Mosquito Records with Vogel, then towards the end of the nineties established Noodles: The stupidest recording organisation in the world - which in turn led on to the creation of sublabels Noodles Discotheque, Noodles Research, and Noodles Institute of Technology. Moving on from the music world, I last saw him in a club in London saying something about "Taking over the BBC from the inside with Cursor Miner"- How true that has turned out to be, I can't say, although the last time I heard a Judge Jules jingle on Radio One, it seemed to have a bit of that Begg magic there.
Here are 36 of my personal favourites both from Mr Begg himself and his labels, put together into a 2 hour megamix..

Signals From Southwark #21: Mark Hawkins May Day 2010 Mix
My records are in a mess right now- so many mixes and a few gigs thrown in for good measure, and they are all over the place.. My Noodles, Subhead and Djax records are amazingly in order, no suprise given the previous mixes, but it's getting tough to find the right record at the right moment. So this mix was a bit unpredictable for me, which is why there are a few hairy moments and also some trax I don't play so often. Also featured here amongst other things, is the new record from Little Nobody Featuring Robo*Brazilera (I insist that you go to a shop and buy it now, before quality techno gets swallowed up because no-one is buying it!), a very exclusive airing of Michael Forshaw's new record on Coin Operated (out in the shops in a week or so!), and also the Little Nobody track that I didn't manage to fit in on the Noodles Megamix last week- I had to get it in there Andrez!

Bit late this week as everything has been a bit too full on for me to do a set and also I was feeling a bit uninspired and felt I needed a break.. So Norman, who cut his teeth at the legendary Stammheim Club in Kassel, Germany sent over his set from the same party where I played a couple of months back.. There's no tracklist, just quality techno sounds, as ever, from Norman - you can find out more about Norman and his music here:

Signals From Southwark #25: Rushathon 2010 – A Mix by Mark Hawkins
Dj Rush was always one of the artists that was really inspiring me when I first started trying to write my own music. Off-kilter, wacky, way out, with a big (6'6") Stage presence, he could even be considered as the Godfather of so-called "wonky techno". For me, back around 1997, that was the appeal for me, trax that were so swung and out there that it almost sounded like the record was out of time with itself, particularly displayed in this mix with track 33 "You'll Catch On" taken from his 1999 release on Djax-Up-Beats which was aptly named "Swingin' the drums"- Yes, it's not one of my bum mixes, the track is SUPPOSED to sound like that!
Over 2 hours, the wide variety of Rush's styles are displayed, Chicago house, Jack Tracks, Disco Techno and straight up Banging stuff are all here. Rush is often easily dismissed, with people saying "oh, that's just Schranz", and whilst in recent years he has often gravitated towards the harder stuff, it's easy to overlook the fact that many of his early works were highly influential, and always full of character and showmanship, which is often lacking in electronic music..
So here's my celebration of Isiah Major's contribution to my musical life, which has often had me bouncing around a dancefloor to the beat!

We're back this week with a mix from Berlin based Beni. Originally from Wolfsburg, Beni is one of Berlin's most unsung talents. Quiet and unassuming, he lets the music speak for itself, a rarity in these days of status updates, promotion and spam. This weeks irregular Signals From Southwark podcast comes from Rat Records Record Shop Manager DJ Prophane. Originating from Avignon, Southern France, Prophane has carved out his own little niche in the London underground, and has personally restored my faith that there are still serious crate digger vinyl junkies out there, who get excited about vinyl and musicians, and new sounds, never heard before.
So here's 1 hour 14 of gritty techno house cross over which is definitely doing something different.

It's sure to be added to as I create new works, but for the time being, this recording gives you a true taste of what my new live performance is going to be like.
